Girolamo Bartolomeo Bortignon
Girolamo Bartolomeo Bortignon OFMCap (born March 31, 1905 in Fellette, Romano d'Ezzelino , Province of Vicenza , † March 12, 1992 in Torreglia ) was an Italian religious priest and bishop .
Life
He was ordained a priest for the Capuchin Order on March 3, 1928 .
Pope Pius XII appointed him on April 4, 1944 the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Belluno and Feltre and titular Bishop of Lydda . The episcopal ordination donated him on May 14th of the same year in Venice Adeodato Giovanni Cardinal Piazza ; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Jeremich , Auxiliary Bishop in Venice , and Giacinto Giovanni Ambrosi OFMCap, Bishop of Chioggia . On September 9, 1945 he succeeded as Bishop of Belluno and Feltre.
On September 9, 1947, he elected the young priest Albino Luciani, later Pope John Paul I, to be Vicar General of the Diocese of Belluno . On April 1, 1949, he was appointed Bishop of Padua . When Pope Pius XII. asked him for a proposal from a bishop for the diocese of Vittorio Veneto , Girolamo Bartolomeo Bortignon Albino Luciani is said to have proposed this. "I know him, he will do better than me," he is supposed to have said. The Pope rejected this proposal; nine years later, however, the successor to Pius XII, Pope John XXIII. , Albino Luciani Bishop of Vittorio Veneto and Girolamo Bartolomeo Bortignon officiated as co-consecrator at Luciani's episcopal ordination.
He remained Bishop of Padua for thirty-two years until his resignation on January 7, 1982.
