The Archdiocese of Yangon ( Latin : Archidioecesis Yangonensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar .
The archbishopric was established on November 27, 1866 as the Apostolic Vicariate of Southwest Burma by Pope Pius IX. founded from cession of territory by the Vicariate Apostolic Burma ; first bishop was Paul Bigandet MEP . In 1870 the name was changed to the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Burma (lat. Birmaniae Meridionalis ). By Pope Pius XII. in 1953 it was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Rangoon ; on January 1, 1955, the vicariate was raised to the Archdiocese of Rangoon. Under Pope John Paul II it was renamed the Archdiocese of Yangon .
