The diocese of Hpa-an was founded on January 24th, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Missionalem navitatem from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Yangon and subordinated to this as a suffragan . First Bishop was Justin Saw Min Thide .
