Diocese of Chełm

The Diocese of Chełm ( Latin Dioecesis Chelmensis ) was a Roman Catholic diocese in the east of today's Poland .

history

After King Casimir the Great of Poland had subjugated the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia in 1366 , he established a number of dioceses there in 1375, including in Chełm . From 1412 the diocese of Chełm belonged to the church province of the archdiocese of Lviv . In 1790 it was renamed the Diocese of Chelm and Lublin . With the 3rd division of Poland , Chełm fell to the Habsburgs in 1795 . On September 22nd, 1805, Pope Pius VII moved the bishopric with the papal bull Quemadmodum Romanorum Pontificum to Lublin , about 75 km away , and the diocese was renamed the Diocese of Lublin .

In January 2009 the titular diocese of Chełm was established.
