The Latin Cathedral Assumption ( Ukrainian Архікатедральна базиліка Успіння Пресвятої Діви Марії Archcathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary ) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Lviv of the Roman Catholic Church in the Ukraine . It was built between the 14th and 15th centuries and was heavily rebuilt between the 18th and 19th centuries.

history

Construction began at the time of the Polish King Casimir the Great in 1370. The patronage was taken over by the recently destroyed Orthodox Church of the Assumption of Mary . The presbytery was finished in 1404, the main nave in 1474. The cathedral was consecrated in 1405 by the bishop Maciej Janina .

The cathedral was badly damaged in the great fire in Lviv in 1527. On April 1, 1656, King John II Casimir solemnly swore in front of the picture of the Gracious Madonna the so-called Lviv pledge to recognize Madonna as Queen of Poland, if the repulsion of Sweden's superiority succeeded (which also happened).

In the years 1765 to 1772, on the instructions of Archbishop Wacław Sierakowski, a fundamental renovation was ordered, during which many grave monuments, epitaphs and altars from the Gothic and Renaissance periods were removed. The building got a late baroque character with rococo elements . In 1777 one of the two towers (height 65 m) got a rococo helmet. A neo-Gothic organ was installed in 1819.

At the end of the 19th century, the presbytery was renovated in Gothic style based on plans by Julian Zachariewicz. At the end of the 19th century, glass paintings were installed (partly based on a project by Józef Mehoffer ). In 1910 the cathedral was given the title of minor basilica . The roof of the cathedral and the tower are covered with sheet brass. In 1917 the brass from the cathedral was removed by the Austrians , who only left it on the tower.

To the right of the high altar is a bronze tomb of Nikolaus Herburt from the Nuremberg Pankraz Labenwolf (16th century).

Between 1998 and 2000 the interior of the cathedral was thoroughly renovated by Polish and Ukrainian restorers. In 2006, the 350th anniversary of the Lviv Vow was celebrated in the presence of Polish President Lech Kaczyński .

Next to the cathedral is the Boim Chapel .
