The Dormition Church (Ukrainian Успенська церква) is a church complex in the old town of Lviv in Ukraine . It was built mainly between 1572 and 1629 in the Renaissance style and today belongs to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine .

history

In 1340 a church dedicated to the three saints burned down . From 1547 to 1549, a Dormition Church was built in its place by the Orthodox Brotherhood, which was also called Wallachenkirche after its founder . In 1571 it burned down.

A 66 meter high tower was built between 1572 and 1578. In 1574 construction began on a chapel dedicated to the three saints , which was consecrated in 1591.

From 1591 to 1629 the current Church of the Assumption was built next to it by the Italian architect Paolo Romano .
