The Pontifical Polish College ( Latin : Pontificium Collegium Polonorum , pl . : Papieskie Kolegium Polskie , Italian : Pontificio Collegio Polacco ) in Rome is a Pontifical College founded for Polish priests and seminarians .

history

On September 1, 1583, Philipp Neri had already started setting up a college for Polish candidates for the priesthood . In the founding years, around 1653, the college was also supported by the Polish King John II Casimir . The institute accepted Polish and Swedish students , but it was closed at the end of the 17th century.

New beginning

In the end, it was thanks to Father Piotr Semenenko CR that the Polish College did not go under. He advocated the reopening of a Polish college in Rome, collected money and became the first rector (1866–1872) after the re-establishment . It was not until 1866 that a new phase of reconstruction began with financial support from the Odescalchi house and Pope Pius IX. (1846–1878) the college could be expanded. On March 24, 1866, a new house was purchased in Via Vecchia Salara, and work began on May 16, 1866. On July 1, 1878, the college was able to move into the current location, the former Pontifical Maronite College , in Via dei Maroniti. St. John of Cracow (1390–1473) was chosen as the patron saint .

In 1936 the college had to move again and rented new premises. After the Second World War the Jesuits took over the management of the school and since 1959 the college has been under the direct administration of the Polish episcopate . The college offers accommodation and training for around 40 seminarians and priests, who can study at the college and the Pontifical Universities in Rome.
