Mammillaria brandegeei is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the American botanist Townshend Stith Brandegee .

description

Mammillaria brandegeei usually grows individually or in groups. The plant bodies are depressed, spherical to short-cylindrical. They are dark green and grow to be 9 centimeters in diameter. The warts are conical, firm, square at the base and have a milky sap . The axillae are woolly. The 1 to 4  central spines are reddish-brown with a dark tip, straight, strong and 1 to 1.2 centimeters long. The 9 to 16 radial spines are whitish to yellowish brown, with a dark tip, needle-like and stiff, just about 0.7 to 1 centimeter long.

The flowers are greenish yellow, brownish yellow or only yellow in color. They become 1.5 to 2 inches long. The slowly ripening fruits are hazy pink in color. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria brandegeei is common in the Mexican state of Baja California .

The first description was in 1894 as Cactus brandegeei by John Merle Coulter . Mary Katharine Brandegee introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1897 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. Brandegeei :
    The nominate form has 2 to 4 central spines, the flowers are greenish yellow or brownish yellow.
  • Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. gabbii (JMCoulter) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1894 as Cactus gabbii by John Merle Coulter . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria brandegeei . The subspecies has 1 to 2 central spines and yellowish flowers.
  • Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. glareosa (Boed.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1933 as Mammillaria glareosa by Friedrich Bödeker . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria brandegeei . The subspecies has only a central spine and yellowish flowers.
  • Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. lewisiana (GELindsay ex HEGates) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1955 as Mammillaria lewisiana by George Edmund Lindsay (1916-2002) and Howard Elliott Gates (1895-1957). David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1998 as a subspecies to Mammillaria brandegeei . The subspecies has 1 to 3 central spines that are bent over the plant apex.

    Cactus brandegeei J.M.Coult. (1894).
  • To the subspecies Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. gabbii :
    Cactus gabbii J.M. Coult. (1894), Mammillaria gabbii (JMCoult.) Engelm. ex K.Brandegee (1897) and Mammillaria brandegeei var gabbii (JMCoult.) RTCraig (1945).
  • To the subspecies Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. glareosa :
    Mammillaria glareosa Boed. (1933), Neomammillaria dawsonii Houghton (1935) and Mammillaria dawsonii (Houghton) RTCraig (1945).
  • To the subspecies Mammillaria brandegeei subsp. lewisiana :
    Mammillaria lewisiana G.E. Lindsay ex HEGates (1955) and Mammillaria gummifera var. lewisiana (GELindsay ex HEGates) E. Kuhn (1981) (nom. inval. ICBN - Article 33.3).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The subspecies were not recorded separately.
