Mary Katharine Brandegee

Mary Katharine Brandegee (born Layne ; widowed Mary Katharine Curran ; born October 28, 1844 in Tennessee , † April 3, 1920 in Berkeley ) was an American botanist and plant collector . Their official botanical author abbreviations are " Curran " and " K.Brandegee "; earlier the abbreviation “ K.Brandeg. " in use. She was married to the botanist Townshend Stith Brandegee (1843-1925) for the second time .

Live and act

Mary Katharine Brandegee was the second of ten children of a miller. She and her family moved frequently during her childhood until the family settled in Folsom . In 1866 she married Hughes Curran, who died in 1874. From 1875 to 1878 she attended the Medical School of the University of California , where she earned her doctorate. Then she practiced as a medic.

From 1883 to 1894 she was the curator of the herbarium at the California Academy of Sciences . In 1889 she married Townshend Stith Brandegee , with whom she made numerous collecting trips through California, Nevada and Baja California . Their honeymoon took them together on foot from San Diego to San Francisco .

From 1894 to 1906 she continued her botanical studies with her husband in San Diego. Since 1898 the botanist couple worked very closely with Carl Albert Purpus . She volunteered at the University of California's Berkeley Herbarium , where her husband was an honorary curator.

Fonts

Mary Katharine Brandegee founded the California Academy of Sciences Bulletin series in 1880 and served as its editor. Together with her husband and Harvey Wilson Harkness (1821-1901), she founded the magazine Zoe in 1890 . Many of her articles on California flora have appeared in Zoe .
