Friedrich Bödeker (born September 11, 1867 in Währentrup ( Lippe ), † April 9, 1937 in Cologne ) was a German craftsman and cactus researcher . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Boed. ".

Life

Friedrich Bödeker came from a family of millers who had lived at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest for centuries. The house where he was born was an old mill in Wärentrup in Lippe. He was actually a painter by profession and had wandered a good chunk of the continent as a skilled craftsman. He then settled in Cologne in 1893 and married his wife in 1896, about whom little is known. From this marriage a son was born.

Bödeker's great passion was researching cacti. In this area he had a lifelong friendship with Wilhelm Weingart . Bödeker first appeared as an author in 1906 in the monthly magazine for cactus science . In many other articles he described new discoveries and worked as an author of plant names. The majority of these initial descriptions appeared in the monthly magazine for cacti of the German Kakteen-Gesellschaft , of which he was a member since 1904, in the 1920s and 1930s. He was particularly fond of the genus Mammillaria (Cactaceae). The "Mammillaria comparison key" published by him in 1933 is still one of the standard works in the taxonomy of mammillaries today .

The species Turbinicarpus boedekerianus was named after him in 2019 .
