Matthias Stephani (born February 22 or 24, 1570 in Pyritz ; † August 26, 1646 in Wolgast ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Matthias Stephani was the son of Hippolytus Stephani and Ursula Kastens. He attended various schools in Pyritz, Stettin , Stargard and Berlin. After his parents' death in 1583, his brother Joachim Stephani took over his training at the Greifswald city school .

Stephani began his studies at the University of Greifswald , went to Königsberg in 1589 and to Wittenberg for half a year in 1591 , mainly to hear Nikolaus von Reusner . He also studied in Leipzig for a while.

In 1592 Stephani was appointed head of the school in Soldin in the Neumark . However, he did not stay in this office long, but continued his studies in Jena . He then went to the Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder, where he studied practical philosophy and law for another three years . Here he already held private collegia, which he continued in Rostock from 1598 .

From Rostock he set off on an educational trip through Brandenburg, Saxony, Bohemia and the Palatinate to Heidelberg . There Stephani became a Doctor of Laws PhD . Back in Rostock he married Jesa Eggardes († 1610) in 1599, the daughter of a businessman.

In 1603 Stephani left Rostock and represented Daniel Runge in his Greifswald professorship, who had taken over the office of Pomeranian court chancellor. In 1604 Duke Philipp Julius appointed him extraordinary professor at the Faculty of Law. After the death of his brother Joachim, he was given a full professorship and at the same time was appointed court advisor to the court in Wolgast .

After the death of his first wife, Stephani married Dorothea Seidel, the daughter of the medicine professor Jakob Seidel, in 1611 . The later professor Petrus Stephani emerged from this marriage .

The brothers Joachim and Matthias Stephani are considered to be the founders of episcopalism .
