The Zelgli ice rink was the former stadium of the EHC Winterthur and during its existence it was the only artificial ice rink in Winterthur . The rink was established in 2002 by the also in the city district Mattenbach exploiting Dende Eishalle Deutweg replaced and demolished.

history

The Zelgli ice field around 1905 with the Catholic Church of the Heart of Jesus in the background.

In 1878 the Zurich Cantonal Council granted the first concession to use the neighboring Mattenbach for the construction of an ice rink. The city council of Winterthur leased part of the Zelgli to the newly founded Winterthur ice-skating club with the order to build and operate two ice rinks . In 1886 the ice fields were fenced in and a wooden hut built for staff and as a utility room. In 1926/29, electrical lighting was created for the first time, which replaced the six carbide-acetylene lamps that had been in existence since 1909 . 25 years later these were replaced by more modern lighting on the hockey field. Thanks to a sponsor, a clubhouse was built next to the wooden hut in 1942. In 1944, Swiss speed skating championships were held on the huge ice rink . In 1953 the city bought the facility from the WSC for 37,000 francs, as the WSC could no longer cope with the construction despite financial subsidies from the city and needed the money to pay off debts. However, the club was still responsible for the operation.

Project Zelgli view by Jakob Tabacznik (1957)

The modern artificial ice rink was built in 1957 and existed until it was demolished. The project was written by architect Jakob Tabacznik from Winterthur. Two ice fields were built, one with a grandstand on the side. In addition, cloakrooms, ticket booths, a kiosk and a company building were built. The whole system cost 1.8 million Swiss francs and was paid for in parts of 600,000 CHF each by the city of Winterthur and the Sport-Toto-Gesellschaft and in parts of 300,000 CHF each by a stock corporation and through mortgages. The finished ice rink was then unofficially opened at the beginning of November, the first game on the new artificial ice rink was the cup game between the first division club EHC Veltheim against the NLB club EHC Kleinhüningen (Veltheim lost 2: 5) on December 17, 1957, as the official opening game of a However, the opening ceremony was served by a game between EHC Veltheim and HC Lugano on January 12 of the next year, which Veltheim also lost 4-1 in front of 3,600 spectators. The mixed economic AG, which was initially responsible for the ice rink, was dissolved relatively quickly and ownership and operation of the ice rink went to the city of Winterthur. As a result of the construction of the new stadium, the stadium hosted the Swiss figure skating championships three times : in 1960, 1964 and 1970.

Over time, a roofed ice rink became necessary, which was the beginning of the long history of suffering in Winterthur up to the construction of the Deutweg ice rink in 2002. In 1981 the population rejected the construction of a covered ice rink with a curling hall for the CC Winterthur behind the existing grandstand. In 1989 the people accepted the construction of a roof over the existing ice rink. However, a suffrage complaint against the city, which was brought up to the federal court, led to another vote, which was rejected by the population in 1991. It was not until 1998 that the construction of an ice rink at Deutweg was finally accepted in the fourth attempt.

The Zelgli artificial ice rink ceased operations on March 10, 2002 after a week of nostalgia with prices and ice skating equipment, as it did at the opening time, and was demolished. Today there is a residential development on the site that won a local architecture award and the associated audience award in 2008.
