Winterthur ice skating club
The Winterthur Ice Skating Club (abbreviated WSC ) is an ice skating club from Winterthur . It was founded in 1869 and is the oldest ice skating club in Switzerland .
history
The WSC was founded in 1869 by Eduard Sulzer-Ziegler , because previously there was only an ice rink in Hettlingen on the Schwerziwiese, which was rather poorly maintained. He was also the first president of the club and until his death in 1913. The first field of the WSC was the Äckerwiesen near today's Rennweghallen. In 1879, the ice skating club got part of the Zelgliwiesen leased from the Winterthur city council on condition that two ice rinks be built and operated. Finally, in 1886, the training operations could be relocated to the Zelgli ice rink after it was fenced in and a clubhouse was built on it - the ice rink even had night lighting, the costs of which were largely co-financed by Sulzer-Ziegler of around CHF 4,000 at the time .
In 1942, thanks to a sponsor, a clubhouse was built on the Zelgli. The club remained the tenant of the facility until 1953, when the ice rink had to be sold to the city due to financial difficulties in its preparation and from then on only acted as the operator. This was the case until 1957, when the whole facility was renewed and a modern art skating facility was built. With the construction of the new Deutweg ice rink in 2002, the club moved there.
