Bartholomew Battus

Bartholomäus Battus (born September 10, 1571 in Hamburg , † November 3, 1637 in Greifswald ) was a Protestant theologian .

Life

Battus came from a family that was expelled from Aalst to Germany because of their Protestant faith. His father Hans Batte was a businessman in Hamburg and had married Maria Kraker. Battus was first to become a businessman and had attended the writing school in his hometown. When he was nine years old, he moved into the academic school of the Johanneum in his hometown under the rector Werner Rolfinck the Elder . In February 1590 Battus began studying philosophy and the oriental languages ​​at the University of Rostock . He also studied theology with David Chyträus , Lucas Bacmeister and David Lobech . In 1594 he received his doctorate under the dean's office of Konrad Ebene as a master of philosophy. He then moved to the University of Wittenberg for a year and a half , taking a trip to Upper Germany and returning to Rostock in 1596 as a scholar theologian .

Bogislaw XIII. von Pommern appointed him in 1597 as professor of logic at the University of Greifswald , where in 1599 he succeeded Matthias Flegius as professor of theology . With that he took over the office of pastor at the St. Jacobikirche . After completing his theological doctorate in 1600 under Friedrich Runge, he was rector of the Alma Mater five times. As a theologian and academic teacher, he held office for 44 years and wrote a number of exegetical and dogmatic writings.

Battus was married twice. His first marriage was in 1597 with Emerentia († 1623), the daughter of the Greifswald councilor Joachim Schwartze . This marriage resulted in two sons and two daughters. We know of these:

His second marriage was in 1624 with Judit Parow (born June 13, 1588 in Stralsund, † October 8, 1638 in Greifswald), the daughter of the Stralsund merchant Johann Parow and his wife Gertrud Wessel. The marriage remained childless.
