Abraham Battus (born September 29, 1606 in Greifswald ; † September 23, 1674 ibid) was a Protestant theologian and general superintendent of Swedish Pomerania .

Life

Abraham Battus was the son of the theologian Bartholomäus Battus and Emerentia Schwarz. After attending the Greifswald city school , he began studying theology at the University of Rostock in 1625 , where he heard lectures from Paul Tarnow , Johann Quistorp , Peter Lauremberg and Johann Huswedel . In 1628 he went to the University of Königsberg , where Cölestin Myslenta , Levin Pouchenius (1594–1648) and Johann Behm were his teachers.

In 1632 he was appointed professor for logic and metaphysics at the University of Greifswald . In 1652 he became a professor of theology and at the same time received the pastorate at the Greifswald Jacobi Church . Battus also took on organizational tasks at the Greifswald University. He was rector and chancellor of the university in 1639, 1640/41, 1651, 1659 and 1671.

In 1662 he was appointed general superintendent for Swedish Pomerania under the Swedish governor Carl Gustav Wrangel . In this function he represented Lutheran orthodoxy and intensely fought against the penetration of Calvinist and Socinian teachings into Western Pomerania.

His son Bartholomäus Battus († 1673), from his first marriage to Anna Erich, was a doctor of law and preposition in Grimmen .
