Georg Engelbrecht (lawyer)

Georg Engelbrecht , ennobled as Georg von Engelbrechten in 1684 , (born January 6, 1626 in Greifswald , † October 12, 1693 in Wismar ) was a German lawyer and judge at the Wismar Tribunal .

Life

Georg Engelbrecht came from a patrician family from Greifswald and was the son of the businessman Jürgen Engelbrecht. He studied from 1643 to 1645 at the University of Rostock and then until 1647 at the University of Königsberg . After spending several months in Greifswald, he went to the University of Leiden in December 1647 . In the following year he traveled to Switzerland , where he stayed in Geneva for a long time . In 1649 he was robbed of his valuables on a trip through Italy and Sicily . He stayed in Paris for most of 1650 . In 1651 he returned to Greifswald, where he received his doctorate the following year. In 1653 he traveled to Regensburg for Ferdinand IV's coronation day and then to Vienna .

After returning to Swedish Pomerania , he was appointed associate professor of law at the University of Greifswald in 1653 . In 1660 he became a full professor and in the same year rector of the university. On September 3, 1663 he was appointed assessor at the Greifswald court and in 1664 appointed to the Wismar tribunal.

During the Northern War he left Wismar with his family in 1675 and lived in Lübeck for five years . After the restoration of the tribunal, he returned to his previous position. In 1681 he was appointed director of the consistory and took over the representation of Vice-President Joachim Rüdiger von Owstin , who was otherwise appointed by the Swedish king .

On March 17, 1684 he was by King Charles XI. raised to the Swedish nobility and since then has borne the name of Engelbrechten .

family

Georg Engelbrecht was married to Barbara Wolffradt (1640–1660), the daughter of Stralsund councilor Bernd / Behrend Wulfradt (from 1647: Behrend von Wolffradt ). He concluded his second marriage in 1663 with Elisabeth Mevius, the eldest daughter of David Mevius .

The first marriage came from the son Georg Bernhard von Engelbrechten (1658–1730), who became chancellor for the imperial territory of the duchies of Bremen-Verden . His son Joachim Friedrich von Engelbrechten (1677-1740) was a councilor in Swedish Pomerania.
