Georg Bernhard von Engelbrechten
Georg Bernhard von Engelbrechten (born April 18, 1658 in Greifswald , † February 17, 1730 in Bremen ) was a Swedish lawyer and chancellor for the imperial territory of the duchies of Bremen-Verden .
biography
Georg Bernhard Engelbrecht was a son of the Greifswald lawyer and professor Georg Engelbrecht (lawyer) , who was raised to the Swedish nobility in 1684 under the name of Engelbrechten , and his wife Barbara, daughter of councilor Berndt Wolffradt . After completing his studies in 1682, he was appointed extraordinary court judge to the judiciary of the Swedish duchies of Bremen and Verden . In 1688 he was appointed full court judge and assessor . Since 1693 he was a councilor and was ennobled at the same time. In 1693 he became vice director of the judiciary and in 1702 extraordinary councilor. From 1705 he carried out various diplomatic missions. In 1716 he became Chancellor of the duchies that had belonged to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (House of Hanover) since 1715 .
Von Engelbrecht (en) was married to Maria Mevius († 1734). The two had two sons and five daughters. He lived at No. 3 Sandstrasse in Bremen's old town . According to a note from archivist Hermann Post , von Engelbrechten is said to have been a resident of the Heineken house at times .
funeral
His magnificent stone sarcophagus - a work by the Bremen sculptor Theophil Frese (1696–1763) - was buried in the Erskin crypt in Bremen Cathedral . When this was filled in, his wife's coffin, disguised as a Swedish countess, was moved in the lead cellar of the cathedral in 1812 . Engelbrechten's sarcophagus was disguised as that of an English officer, as the Napoleonic government in the department of Bremen prohibited burials in inner-city churches. In 1822 the chancellor's stone sarcophagus followed in the lead cellar. During this (or before) the body was removed from the sarcophagus and placed in an open wooden coffin. This reburial was not known until the 1960s.
