André Armand Cardinal Vingt-Trois (born November 7, 1942 in Paris , France ) is retired Archbishop of Paris .

Life

André Vingt-Trois was born as a child of Paulette Vuillamy and Armand Vingt-Trois in the 5th arrondissement of Paris . After finishing school at the Lycée Henri IV , he studied from 1962 Catholic theology and philosophy at the Saint-Sulpice seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux . The studies, which he had to interrupt from 1964 to 1965 because of the military service in which he was stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany , he completed with a theological licentiate at the Institut Catholique de Paris .

On June 28, 1969, he received the sacrament of ordination through Cardinal François Marty . He then was chaplain in the parish of Sainte-Jeanne de Chantal in the 16th arrondissement of Paris . In 1974 he was appointed director of the Saint-Sulpice seminary, where he also taught moral theology and sacramental theology .

After Jean-Marie Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris in 1981, the latter appointed him Vicar General of the Archdiocese. Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Thibilis on June 25, 1988 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Paris . He received the episcopal ordination on October 14th of the same year by Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger . He took his bishop's motto "For God so loved the world" from the Gospel of John ( John 3:16  EU ).

On April 21, 1999, he was appointed Archbishop of Tours and on February 11, 2005, he was appointed Archbishop of Paris to succeed Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger . The ceremonial inauguration was done by the enthronement on March 5, the same year in the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris . In addition, on March 14, 2005 he was appointed Ordinary of the Byzantine Rite Believers in France.

Vingt-Trois was elected President of the French Bishops' Conference on November 5, 2007 in Lourdes . In 2013, Georges Pontier replaced him in this position.

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Luigi dei Francesi in the college of cardinals .

In 2012 André Vingt-Trois was invested in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

On December 7, 2017, Pope Francis accepted the age-related resignation and appointed Michel Aupetit , Bishop of Nanterre , as his successor.
