Johannes Wagner (born February 5, 1908 in Brohl , † November 25, 1999 in Trier ) was a German Roman Catholic prelate , theologian and liturgical scholar . He is one of the main contributors to the liturgical reform after the Second Vatican Council .

Life

Wagner graduated from the Abitur in 1927 at the Andernach Collegiate High School ; he had previously joined the Catholic Bund New Germany there and made it to the position of district chairman of the Middle Rhinegau. In this context he came into contact with the writings of Romano Guardini and the liturgical movement .

Under this influence he studied theology and was ordained a priest on July 30, 1932 by Franz Rudolf Bornewasser in Trier . His dogmatics professor Heinrich von Meurer was of great influence during his studies . This was followed by positions as a chaplain in Saarbrücken and a position as director of the Caritas Association in Saarbrücken. Von Meurer, who had become vicar general in Trier in 1936 , appointed Wagner that year as diocesan secretary of Catholic Action . He also entrusted him with work on reforming the Trier ritual (baptism, burial, wedding ceremony).

After the war, the German Bishops 'Conference appointed him secretary of the Liturgical Commission of the Bishops' Conference at the suggestion of Meurers . He held the office from 1946 to 1975. From this activity he came to found the Liturgical Institute in Trier in 1947, of which Wagner became director in 1950. Among other things, he organized the large open-air worship services on the occasion of the exhibition of the Holy Skirt in Trier and initiated the seven international liturgical study meetings in Paris with the Center National de Pastoral Liturgique (CNPL); at the Pastoral Liturgical Congress of Assisi in 1956 he was a member of the four-member central organizing committee.

Another important step towards international importance finally came with Wagner's appointment to the liturgy commission in preparation for the Second Vatican Council in 1960. From 1962 he was appointed by John XXIII. Council theologian . In order to implement the decisions of the council, he became head ("relator") of Coetus X - Ordo Missae within the consilium in 1964 to carry out the liturgical reform . He was also consultor of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments until 1975 . He had a decisive influence on the coordination and creation of the new liturgical books after the 2nd Vaticanum in Germany; these essentially bear the signature of Wagner. Until 1986 he was managing director of the permanent commission for the publication of the common liturgical books in the German-speaking area .

Since 1971 Johannes Wagner was a member of the Trier cathedral chapter ; In 1976, Bishop Bernhard Stein appointed him his dean .
