action

Fourteen-year-old Meg Murphy's family has been under a curse for 100 years that causes everything they do to go wrong and result in chaos. Her father therefore works as a product tester and is hired by companies to uncover all errors in new products. Her little brother Charlie is a passionate skateboarder, and the curse keeps getting accidents and falls. Charlie films this and posts it on the Internet, where he is known as the "Board Crasher". When the family home falls victim to the curse again, they drive to the small town of Harvest Hills to spend the summer holidays with Meg's grandfather. In Harvest Hills, Meg first meets Brett, who tells her about the upcoming Harvest Hills Festival. She also meets Ivy, who goes to Meg's school and also spends her summer in Harvest Hills. Ivy nicknamed Meg Hurricane Meg because she is always affected by Meg's bad luck.

In her grandfather's garden, Meg finds her great-great-grandfather Tommy Murphy's diary, which contains the story of the curse. Tommy, actually known as the lucky guy, went to the harvest dance with Caitlin O'Leary 100 years ago, even though she was considered a witch in town. By a mishap, Tommy embarrassed Caitlin, who then put a curse on him and all of his descendants. Meg reads in her diary that she can break the curse if she passes the Tommy Murphys lucky coin on to a descendant of Caitlin O'Leary. The last page of the diary is blown out of the window unnoticed by Meg.

Meg learns from Brett that the coin is on display at the local museum. The night before the Harvest Dance, Meg and Charlie get into the museum and find the coin. They also discover a family tree on which they identify Ivy as a direct descendant of Caitlin O'Leary.

Meg and Brett go to the Harvest Dance the next day, with the aim of handing the coin to Ivy and breaking the curse. Brett buys Meg a raffle ticket to show her that she can't always be unlucky. Ivy's dress is ruined by various mishaps during the event, and it turns out that Brett is her cousin and thus also a descendant of the O'Learys. Shortly before the end of the dance, Meg hands the coin to Brett. Shortly afterwards she wins the main prize of the raffle, a trip to the Grand Canyon , the curse seems to be broken.

Meanwhile, Charlie finds the last page of the diary, which says that the curse will not be lifted by the coin, but rather passed on to the O'Leary descendants. Meg's parents and grandfather confirm this and tell her that she will have time until the end of the Harvest Hills Festival to avert the curse from Brett's family. Meg runs to Brett's house, which she finds completely devastated. Ivy is here too, since her house has also fallen victim to the curse. Together they go looking for Brett to hold the festival's closing ceremony. Along the way, Meg notices how much the curse has become a part of her life that her entire family has learned to accept. She climbs Brett up a tower on which he is supposed to pull down the city flag and thus end the festival. She manages to stop him and take back the coin and with it the curse. Brett admits that he likes her, with or without a curse.

A few days later, Meg's family started the won trip to the Grand Canyon.
