Raymond Lee "Ray" Luzier (born June 14, 1970 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American drummer . He has been a member of the band Korn since 2007 and moves stylistically in the areas of heavy metal , alternative metal , nu metal and industrial metal as well as hard rock . In the mid-1990s, Luzier worked as a drummer for the band Metal Shop , but got out there to take the chance to go on tour with David Lee Roth .

Life

Luzier grew up in West Newton . There he began to learn to play drums at the age of five. For a while he played in a marching band , whose visual effects he still incorporates into his live performances. In 1988 he moved to Hollywood to study at the Musicians Institute . His breakthrough came through his work with David Lee Roth , with whom he played from 1997 to 2005. In the 1990s he also played drums for The Hideous Sun Demons .

In January 2006, he took part in the NAMM Show in Anaheim with Billy Sheehan and Toshi Hiketa . Robert DeLeo and Dean DeLeo of the Stone Temple Pilots also appeared as part of an impromptu band with Steve Ferrone . After seeing Luzier's performance, the DeLeo brothers asked him to join Army of Anyone , a band they formed with the singer Richard Patrick of Filter .

In 2007, Luzier had the opportunity to join the band Korn after David Silveria left them in 2006. Luzier flew to Seattle to attend the audition for the new Korn drummer. The decisive factor for his admission to the band was probably that he had not learned the required six, but thirty pieces. In 2008, after Luzier played his first show with Korn in Dublin , front man Jonathan Davis announced that Luzier was now an official member of the band.

In 2013 he founded the supergroup KXM together with Doug Pinnick and George Lynch . The group released their first album the following year.

Equipment and drumming

Luzier is not a classic metal drummer as he has been working with a lot of electronic effects since The Path of Totallity . He describes AC / DC , Iron Maiden , Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails as influences . In addition to drums, he has mastered the guitar and bass .

He changes his equipment for the appropriate style of the artists he works with. He has an endorsement with Pearl , Sabian cymbals, Remo heads, Latin percussion, DW hardware, Vic Firth sticks, factory metal percussion cymbals and Humes and Berg drum cases. He also owns an individually designed monster drum kit from the Pearl Drums Reference Series. For the current KoRn Tour he uses a drum kit from the Pearl Crystal Beat Series in the color "Clear". He also uses electronics from Yamaha and Moongels. He gets his hardware from Drum Workshop.
