Doug Pinnick (* 3. September 1950 in Braidwood , Illinois ) is an American rock - and Metal - bassist and - singer . He became known through his work for King's X , with which he released 14 albums, but also through six solo albums.

Career

Pinnick was born in Braidwood but moved to Joliet when he was 14. He comes from a very musical family. In his youth he was influenced by Motown artists such as Stevie Wonder , Little Richard and Aretha Franklin . But Jimi Hendrix , U2 and Metallica also inspired him. As bassist, he named Chris Squire from Yes , Glenn Hughes from Trapeze , Roger Glover from Deep Purple and John Entwistle from The Who as role models, as well as James Jamerson , who played for the Motown label.

As early as 1980 he founded the rock trio with drummer Jerry Gaskill and guitarist Ty Tabor, which initially appeared under the name "Sneak Preview" and was to be renamed King's X from 1987 and since then has been popular with music lovers thanks to its unique rock sound is known.

In 1998 , Pinnick came out as gay in an interview with Regeneration Quarterly . Initially this met with negative reactions, e.g. B. from the Christian side.

In 2012, Pinnick started the project Pinnick Gales Pridgen with the blues-rock guitarist and singer Eric Gales and ex- The Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen . The trio released two albums through Magna Carta Records in 2013 and 2014 .

In 2014 Pinnick started another project, the blues trio Grinder Blues with the Bihlman Brothers, which made its debut in 2014 via Megaforce Records .

In the same year, 2014, he spontaneously founded the band KXM with George Lynch (ex- Dokken ) and Ray Luzier , Korn's drummer , they released an album and went on tour.

In February 2017, the second album by KXM , entitled Scatterbrain , will be released.

Equipment

Pinnick plays an often warm and round-sounding, sometimes distorted bass sound that is generated by several Ampeg SVT-4 amplifiers. He uses a 12-string bass built by Yamaha, which is a triple-strung four-string.
