Professional reviews were largely positive; the album achieved a metascore of 67% based on nine reviews.
The Metal Hammer rated The Serenity of Suffering with six out of a possible seven points. The editor Matthias Weckmann describes several songs on the album as "the top quality league in the Korn values canon" and says that the band "has not shown its own strengths so consistently for a good 15 years". Nadine Schmidt from metal.de attested: "KORN travel with“ The Serenity Of Suffering ”back to the future".
However, there were sometimes much more critical reviews such as Rolling Stone and the website laut.de , which gave the album only two out of a possible five points. Laut.de editor Alex Klug thinks that the songs hardly differ from the band's earlier works and describes the sound carrier as a "lifeless result of a Frankenstein operation made from lavish three-tone refrains".
