The Schecter Guitar Research is an American electric guitar - and bass guitar maker based in Burbank ( California ).

Founded in 1976 by David Schecter in Van Nuys , the company originally manufactured spare parts for guitars. In the late 1970s, when Fender began to experience quality defects, Schecter was known for high quality alternatives to the Fender Stratocaster and Fender Telecaster . During this time, higher quality materials were used for these guitars than Fender. In the middle of the 80s the company was sold to Chinese investors and in 1989 the company launched its own guitar models. Electric basses and amplifiers followed later. The quality of these later instruments, which are no longer attributed to the so-called 'Van Nuys era', fell drastically. The instruments are primarily used in metal and hard rock , but are also used in jazz and blues . It is sold in comparatively small numbers via external trading partners in the USA and Europe. In 2006 the first European showroom was opened in Hanover.

Schecter also has "Signature" series in its range, i.e. guitar models whose design and technical equipment were influenced by well-known musicians, for example the Avenged Sevenfold Custom Series (guitarist Zacky Vengeance & Synyster Gates ) , which was inspired by the American metal band Avenged Sevenfold . . Well-known musicians who play guitars or basses from Schecter include Robert Smith from The Cure , Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits , Jeff Loomis from Nevermore or Sami Yli-Sirniö from Waltari . Also Alternative Metal / Nu Metal -Bands as Papa Roach (guitarist Jerry Horton ) or Seether (singer and guitarist Shaun Morgan ) play instruments Schecter.
