Alexandre-Théophile Vandermonde
Alexandre-Théophile Vandermonde (born February 28, 1735 in Paris , † January 1, 1796 ibid) was a French musician , mathematician and chemist .
Vandermonde's passion was playing the violin . Interest in math problems only came when he was around 35 years old. Vandermonde dealt, among other things, with symmetric functions , the solution of cyclic polynomials and here anticipated parts of Galois theory . He also looked at the knight problem in chess . In 1771 he was accepted into the Académie des Sciences .
The Vandermonde matrix is named after him , a special form of a matrix .
