Nordazepam (also desmethyldiazepam ) belongs to the benzodiazepine group of active ingredients . The connection was patented by Hoffmann-La Roche in 1963 . Nordazepam is a metabolic product ( metabolite ) of many therapeutically common benzodiazepines, such as the diazepam , but is also used directly as a drug. Nordazepam differs from diazepam in the lack of a methyl group in position 1 on the diazepine ring. It has an exceptionally long plasma half-life and therefore duration of action.

The half-life is about 36 to 200 hours. Its potency is roughly the same as that of diazepam. Nordazepam is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute or chronic anxiety, tension and agitation.

Like all benzodiazepines, Nordazepam has a sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, amnestic, muscle-relaxing, anticonvulsant, euphoric and mood-enhancing effect. It acts like the other benzodiazepines on the GABA _A receptor , but only partially agonistically, which reduces the potency. It also has side effects similar to the other benzodiazepines ( somnolence , muscular hypotension ) and is highly addictive. Strong psychological and physical addiction can develop quickly.

Nordazepam is a metabolite of diazepam, chlordiazepoxide , clorazepate , prazepam , pinazepam, and medazepam . Nordazepam itself is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys.
