Motograter is an American metal band from Santa Barbara , California that formed in 1995. They achieved notoriety through their self-made instrument, the Motograter . This consists of industrial cables and guitar parts, which resulted in an instrument with a very deep bass sound. The band is also known for performing with their bodies completely painted on at their concerts. Singer Ivan Moody was also active with Ghost Machine and is currently the lead singer with Five Finger Death Punch .

history

Founding, Hugh Chardon and Indy (1995-2001)

Motograter was founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1995 by Bruce "Grater" Butler ("Motograter"), Joey "Smur" Krzywonski (percussion), Chris "Crispy" Binns (drums) and Zak "The Waz" Ward (vocals) . During the recordings for the first album (Indy) in 2000, Eric Gonzales (electronics / samples) was added to the band. In 2001 guitarist Neil Godfrey was added.

Motograter (2002-2005)

In 2002 Godfrey, Gonzales, and Zak left the band. Matt "Nuke" Nunes joined as the new guitarist, Ivan "Ghost" Moody as the singer. In 2003 the album Motograter was released on a major label. It was the first album that contained real guitar samples. Before the album was even released, a second guitarist was named, JR. Zak returned to the band and was responsible for the electronics and the samples, as well as the back-up vocals. As a result, the band was now seven people.

In the summer, however, Nuke left the band and initially there were six. However, Nuke was later replaced by Ty Fury. In the summer of 2004, Ty Fury was again replaced by Aaron ("A-Bomb") and it was announced that they were working on a new album. A short time later Zak left the band again. It was decided not to replace him. In the fall of 2004, the band toured without Bruce and Smur, which left drummer Crispy as the only founding member. Instead of using the "Motograter" they were supported by bassist Johnny Nailz. This line-up should only exist for the tour, but it was not yet clear whether Smur and Bruce would return.

Break and break up (2005-2006)

In 2005 Motograter announced that they needed a break so that some members could concentrate on their side projects. The band got back together in 2006 and played a single show at the Delicious Rox Festival, where Ivan made it clear to fans and band members that he would be leaving Motograter. Crispy and Ivan as well as JR, Bruce and Nuke left the band. After this gig, it wasn't clear how the band should go on.

Reunion, pre-release , and second album (2008-present)

In 2009 it was announced that the band was back with members from Santa Barbara, California. They now also had a bass player who played together with the "Motograter". Angel was now the singer, Nuke and Tyler Hole the guitarists, Mylon Guy the bassist, Twitch the drummer and Bruce played the "Motograter". With this line-up, they played a show in Las Vegas under the name "Out Of Curiosity" to test the new material live on an unsuspecting audience before the decision was made to use the name Motograter again. The "Motograter" was not used at this show.

Before playing another concert, Bruce was replaced by Mark Nosler, which meant that there was no longer a founding member. The sound of the band was now also more extreme compared to previous recordings. The band's current demos contain electronic sounds, but no percussion, as was the case in the past. The use of a traditional bass also gives the songs a different, even deeper sound.
