Gothic is the first part of the Gothic computer game series . The game was developed by Piranha Bytes and published by Shoebox 2001 for Windows .

On December 13, 2019, THQ Nordic put the demo version of a remake online, which is under development at its studio THQ Nordic Barcelona.

action

The game begins with a video sequence in which the history of the game world is told. The kingdom of Myrtana is at war with the orcs , and weapons made from magical ore are crucial to the war. This ore is mined on the island of Khorinis, on which King Rhobar II had a prison colony built in the mining area. The king arranged for a magical barrier to be erected around the area, which would allow entry but make it impossible to break out. In the process, an unexplained error occurred as a result of which the barrier expanded and included the magicians and the entire valley. In the revolt that followed, the prisoners overpowered the guards and then entered into negotiations with the king. They continued to mine ore and were supplied according to their wishes by the king, who was dependent on the ore deliveries.

The player is thrown into this barrier and his first task is to fight for a place in one of the three camps within the barrier. You can choose from the camp of a sect in the swamp, the old camp, which works for the king, and the new camp, which is working on an outbreak. Regardless of which camp the player chooses, his next task leads him to the camp of the sect, where he is supposed to help with the preparations for an invocation of the Sleeper , the god of brotherhood. In the course of the invocation, their spiritual guide dies and it becomes clear that the sleeper is an evil being. However, one of the gurus, Cor Kalom, does not accept this development and goes in search of the sleeper himself. The sect is now placing its hopes on the escape plans of the water mages of the New Camp, and the player supports this faction from now on.

The New Camp has accumulated a gigantic amount of ore, with which the water mages want to blow up the barrier. In order to realize the Aquatic Mages' escape plan, some preparations still need to be made and things procured. The player takes on these tasks again. The plot takes a decisive turn when the mine of the Old Camp collapses. Gomez, the leader of the old camp, has the mine of the new camp conquered and murders the fire mages who want to stand in his way. The magicians of the water, who had counted on the support of the fire magicians in their breakout plan, then send the hero to another magician: the demon summoner Xardas, who lives secluded in a tower and has completely different plans for the breakout. The hero decides to work for Xardas from now on after he reports that the Sleeper is an evil demon and responsible for the runaway barrier. To bring the barrier down, the demon must be killed, who lives in a temple under the city of the orcs.

When the hero explores this temple, he finds that the sleeper's guardians cannot be wounded with his weapons. However, he finds a special sword, called Uriziel, which, according to Xardas, has to be recharged with magical energy. This is provided by the ore heap of the New Camp, which the hero deprives of all energy. After fleeing from the angry water mages, the player goes back to the temple, where he fights his way to the sleeper and meets Cor Kalom. After the showdown , the sleeper is banished from the world, but the temple above him collapses and the hero is buried by the debris.

Game world

Map of the mine valley

The game world is limited by the barrier and the mountains surrounding the valley. Within the barrier are various areas, such as the swamp and the coast in the east, the mountains in the north and west, the deserted orc area in the south and forests and meadows in the center. Some areas are more dangerous than others because of the opponents, so that the player can only explore the entire world as the game progresses.

There are paths between the camps and other important locations, but they are usually not the shortest, but the safest connection. Since the barrier is populated by outlaws and wild animals, the player must move carefully. In the beginning, the player is advised against in particular the forests and the orc area. There are also a number of dungeons that are particularly dangerous places, but must be explored as part of certain tasks.

The population is predominantly male, women are only available as slaves to those in power. The scenario is medieval and poor, with most of the buildings either makeshift or in decline. The world of gods around Innos (god of light and the righteous), Adanos (god of water and balance) and Beliar (god of darkness and evil) is only very sparsely described in Gothic . The deities are explained in more detail in Gothic 2 or in the Gothic 2 expansion The Night of the Raven . The water mages worship the god Adanos, whereas the fire mages Innos. Beliar is worshiped by the black magicians, most of whom can only be found in the third part.

Camps

In Gothic the prisoners are organized in a total of three camps. The relationships between the camps and the resulting potential for conflict form an important element of the plot in the game. In all camps there is a fixed hierarchy in which the player can advance.

  • Old Camp : The largest of the camps is the Old Camp, located in and around the original garrison castle, which is in the center of the mine valley. An outer ring consisting of wooden huts and palisades was built around the castle by the prisoners. The commanders are the archbarons , especially Gomez. Among them serve the guards , the camp fighters, who in turn stand above the shadows , who operate as traders, thieves and hunters. The bottom layer is formed by the diggers , who mine the ore in the mines. The magicians of the circle of fire occupy a special position in this camp. They are outside the hierarchy but are respected and work with the archbarons. The old mine also belongs to the old camp, which is guarded by guards and shadows. The old warehouse exchanges ore for goods of all kinds with the outside world.
  • New Camp : The New Camp is located in the mountains to the west of the barrier. The supporters of this camp are working on an escape plan, they reject trade with the outside world and are therefore enemies with the old camp. In the hierarchy of the New Camp, the magicians from the circle of water come first, they develop the breakout plan. The mercenaries work for them , they protect the magicians and carry out assignments for them. In third place are the bandits , including the prospectors who mine the ore for the outbreak in the mine of the New Camp, the Free Mine. There are also farmers who are responsible for growing rice under the command of the rice lord and his thugs. The New Camp is supplied by growing rice and by raids on the Old Camp.
  • Swamp camp : The swamp camp is the brotherhood's camp and is located in the swamp in the southeast of the barrier. The sect worships the sleeper in the hope that he will help them escape. They have friendly trade relations with the other two camps and try to evangelize new followers for their cause there. The spiritual leader of the brotherhood is Y'Berion, under him stand the gurus who bear the title Baal . The guru Cor Kalom has the practical authority. There are also the Templars , the camp's combatant caste. They protect the bearing from Sumpfhaiattacken, also to delegations issued by Templars to the old mine around there Minecrawler because their tongs secretion hunt. The novice finally are the workers who pursue the cultivation and processing of Sumpfkraut and listen to the teachings of Baal. The commanders of the swamp camp derive their claim to power from the will of the sleeper, the striving of the brotherhood primarily applies to spiritual enlightenment. The marsh camp supplies itself through the trade in marsh herbs, which has an intoxicating effect similar to marijuana.

Characters

The German voice actors are given

  • The nameless hero ( Christian Wewerka ): At the beginning of the adventure, the pawn is banished to the so-called "penal colony". Nothing is known about his past and his name, it is a peculiarity of the Gothic series that he can never give his name. But the hero can not come to terms with being trapped in the "colony" and tries everything to one day destroy the barrier.
  • Diego (Uwe Koschel): Diego is one of the leading shadows of the old camp. He's the first character the player meets, and he keeps helping the hero out. Diego is a cunning thief and was thrown into the barrier because his client betrayed him. If the player wants to join the old camp, Diego is his mentor.
  • Gorn (Helge Heynold): Gorn is a mercenary in the New Camp who was thrown into the barrier for heresy. He is an adventurous fighter who is always by the player's side. He is loyal to Lee, the leader of the mercenaries, and knew him from his time outside the barrier, when they both fought shoulder to shoulder in the royal army.
  • Milten (Dieter Gring): Milten Plescott is a young fire magician from the old camp. He was forcibly recruited at a young age. He was a deserter , because of it and the theft of an apple he was thrown into the barrier, and there he trained as a magician. He is very young and blindly trusts the hero. By chance he survived the cowardly murder of the archbarons against the fire magicians and thereupon supports the hero in his fight against the sleeper.
  • Lester ( Peter Heusch ): Lester is a novice of the swamp camp. He is highly regarded among novices and looks after newcomers to the swamp camp. This way he gets to know the hero and supports him with all kinds of advice during the game. Lester is not a great fighter, but he always tries to support the hero. He was thrown into the barrier for killing two guards who had arrested him for nothing.
  • Xardas ( Bodo Henkel ): Xardas is a former fire mage. He was instrumental in creating the barrier by directing the powers of the other magicians. When the barrier was created, like all other magicians, he was enclosed by it. He studies the arts of demon and necromancy. When the other fire mages found out, he was banished. Since then he has been living in seclusion in a tower in orc territory. He informs the hero about the sleeper and guides him in his fight against the demon. Xarda's motives remain uncertain, but the hero is forced to work with him.
  • The Sleeper : The Sleeper is an arch demon called by the orcs to assist in battle. However, it got out of hand and made the orc priests undead. The orcs built a huge temple for him, which should also be a prison. He was awakened from his sleep by the creation of the barrier and since then he has been working on increasing his power. He leads Y'Berion to found the Brotherhood of the Swamp. The hero finally banishes him again by piercing the hearts of the priests from which the sleeper draws his power. After the sleeper is banished, the barrier collapses.
  • Y'Berion ( Aart Veder ): He's the leader of the swamp camp. According to a vision of the sleeper, he founded the Brotherhood of Sleepers. Believing that the sleeper will show him a way out of the barrier.
  • Cor Kalom ( Michael Deckner ): Cor Kalom is the second most powerful man in the swamp camp, after Y'Berion, but who is killed by a strong vision of the sleeper. Cor Kalom is one of the few who does not want to see the sleeper as a demon even after the great invocation. He then leads his own expedition in search of the Sleeper and thus becomes an adversary of the hero.
  • Lee (Hans-Jörg Karrenbrock): Lee is the leader of the mercenaries of the New Camp. The mercenaries, in turn, report directly to the water mages. Lee was once one of the highest generals in the royal army and one of the king's closest confidants and advisers. But the other nobles saw their position of power endangered by Lee and charged him with the murder of King Rhobar's wife. Due to his close relationship with the king and his services to the fatherland, he was saved from the gallows. But the king had no choice but to condemn him and the only alternative option was the colony. Lee vowed that if one day the barrier fell, he would take revenge on his traitors.
  • Lares (Uwe Koschel): Lares is the leader of the bandits in the New Camp and Lee's right-hand man. He organized raids on convoys of the old camp and distributed the spoil among his men.
  • Mud (Joachim Pütz): Mud can be seen as an Easter egg . He is in the old camp. If you come near him, he speaks to the hero and wants to make friends. He then follows the hero everywhere and speaks to him again and again. Mud does not stop following the hero until he is knocked down.
  • Cor Angar (Hans-Jörg Karrenbrock): Cor Angar is the leader of the Templars in the swamp camp. He built it with Cor Kalom and Y'Berion and is Y'Berion's bodyguard.
  • Thorus (Helge Heynold): Thorus is the leader of the guardsmen in the old camp. Together with Gomez he rebelled against the guards and led a tough regiment in the castle.
  • Gomez (Uwe Koschel): Gomez is the supreme archbaron and ruler of the old camp. He rebelled against the guards with Thorus and most of the other guardsmen and had held some kind of leadership position since his time as a prisoner.
  • Saturas (Bodo Henkel): Saturas is the chief water mage and leader of the New Camp. His plan is to blow up the barrier with a large amount of magical ore. To do this, he needs an almanac and the five focus stones that were used to create the barrier in order to focus the magical energy.
  • Ian ( Helmut Winkelmann ): Ian is the boss of the old mine, which belongs to the old warehouse, where magic ore is mined. This is needed by the archbarons to exchange with the outside world for goods of all kinds, as well as slaves, and is dismantled by the diggers of the old camp. The nameless hero and Ian meet in two quests (needs list and minecrawler queen).

Gameplay

The game is played in the third person view (tracking camera) with the keyboard or alternatively with the mouse and keyboard. It is not possible to set the level of difficulty.

Combat system

The close combat in Gothic is controlled with the keyboard. Since the combat system allows attacks to be blocked and interrupted, timing is an important factor in landing a hit. There are both one-handed and two-handed weapons for close combat.

Long-range combat is possible with a bow or crossbow, target acquisition is automatic to the closest enemy in the targeted direction. The damage rate depends on the attributes (armor) of the opponent.

Even with magical attacks, the target is automatically detected. One way to avoid getting hit is to dodge the relatively slow attacks. There are spells that are not used to attack, but open up alternative solutions for the player. For example, he can transform himself into an animal or even put an opponent to sleep.

Armor increases the player's defense value.

Successful combat with a melee weapon does not kill human opponents; they pass out. To kill the opponent, another targeted action is required (finishing move). Magic and ranged attacks kill enemies instantly.

Character development

A creation of the character before the start of the game is not possible with Gothic . In addition, the name of the hero is unknown, every time the hero tries to give his name, he is interrupted. That has not changed in the following Gothic parts either. By completing tasks, knocking down opponents and killing wild animals, the hero receives experience points. As soon as the player reaches a certain number of points, he goes up a level and receives learning points. With suitable teachers, these can be converted into skills and attributes or enhancements thereof.

You can train your character in four different melee and ranged combat techniques, each of which is divided into two levels. These techniques include close combat with one-handed and two-handed weapons as well as long-range combat with a bow or crossbow. By training these skills, the player has a higher chance of scoring a direct hit, with weapon damage counting twice. You can also see improved weapon stance and faster combinations of attacks in the character. For melee attacks, in addition to weapon damage, the character's strength attribute is also used to calculate damage. In long-range combat, only weapon damage counts, but the skill value has an influence on the basic hit probability.

In addition to the basic attributes of strength and skill, it is also possible to increase the hero's mana . This is a basic requirement for the casting of spells. In addition, as a magician, it is considered to learn up to six consecutive circles of magic, which are the prerequisite for ever stronger runic spells.

Aside from the fighting skills, there are the thief skills sneaking, opening locks and pickpocketing, as well as the opportunity to learn acrobatics or the evisceration of various animal trophies.

The number of life points increases automatically as you level up.

Development history

Stefan Nyul, Michael Hoge, Alex Brüggemann and Tom Putzki, the founders of Piranha Bytes who previously worked for Greenwood Entertainment , officially began developing Gothic on October 4th, 1997 . Stefan Nyul initially acted as managing director and took care of the cooperation with the external programmers . Mike Hoge was responsible for game design , art design and textures . Alex Brüggemann took care of character design and animation and Tom Putzki started creating the 3D model of the game world. The engine was developed by external programmers, three students from Oldenburg. After initial press reports, a publishing deal was signed in February 1999 with the still new company Egmont Interactive . Although a release was originally planned for the end of 1999, it is said to have been missing at all ends in early 2000, even though a release is now planned for May of the same year. The reason for the unfinished state in this phase of development is said to have been frequent changes to dialogues and game world.

"It was never enough for me, I still wanted to go a step further."

- Michael "Mike" Hoge (Lead Game Designer) : GameStar

Da Alte Lager was modeled and redesigned three times in the course of development. While Piranha Bytes parent company Phenomedia went public in 1999, the developers of Gothic were able to persuade the young publisher Egmont Interactive to postpones and thus more money until an ultimatum was finally set at the end of 2000. This leads to a high number of overtime hours in the last months of development - a so-called " crunch time ".

Finally Gothic will be released on March 15, 2001 under the label Shoebox by Egmont Interactive and dtp entertainment .

After its publication in 2001, the confusing inventory and the cumbersome keyboard controls were criticized. The control was only extended by a mouse control shortly before the release , but it made an unfinished impression. Numerous bugs that led to game crashes or prevented some quests from being solved were particularly annoying . Long loading times and high hardware requirements for the computer generation released in 2001 also spoiled the fun of some players. Most of these bugs could be fixed by the following patches , remaining problems were partly fixed by unofficial patches created by the community of players .

The game's soundtrack was composed by Kai Rosenkranz - then a programmer at Piranha Bytes.

technology

The ZenGin graphics engine, developed by the external programming team “Mad Scientists”, enabled a long range of vision for the time. It was also used in a modified form in the follow-up game Gothic 2 .

A multiplayer mode was originally planned, but was not implemented by the developers. The reason given was the enormous effort. However, some modifications made by fans now allow playing together in the Gothic engine.

The German-language computer game magazine GameStar described Gothic in its test from 2001 as an atmospheric role-playing game from Germany. The high visibility and the fact that apart from a few larger caves there are no loading limits were emphasized. At that time, however, this required correspondingly strong PC hardware and comparatively long loading times even on powerful computers. The day and night cycles were rated particularly positively, which not only affect the daily routine of NPCs, but also the behavior of animals and monsters. A comparison was made with Ultima IX: Ascension , which does not offer any daily routines.

"Hills, forests and settlements together result in one of the most believable game worlds that has ever been explored on the PC. At least if the appropriate hardware is available. "

- Peter Steinlechner : GameStar

Jörg Luibl from the online magazine 4Players even described the title as an exceptional game, which he assumed would "set new standards for role-playing worldwide." The reasons are a dense atmosphere, great freedom of action and a very good quest structure. Only the numerous gameplay bugs clouded the overall impression.

In the PC Games test, great graphics are particularly emphasized. In addition, the game offers gigantic areas and a lot of freedom. According to Rüdiger Steidle, it was also possible to smooth out the cumbersome control of the preview version. Only with the mouse interface integrated under time pressure is it possible for him to really enjoy “the journey through the open-air prison”.

"Despite three years of development, the graphics are among the best that has ever happened on my screen when it comes to role-playing games."

- Thomas Weiß : PC Games

Retrospective

In a video for the game's 15th anniversary in 2016, PC Games calls Gothic a great, extensive role-playing game, with which even today not many RPGs can compete in terms of replay value and world design. The game also scores with atmosphere. The environment is not just a backdrop and NPCs show credible reactions. In retrospect, it is also particularly interesting how Gothic represents the hero's abilities. While he hacks at opponents quite clumsily at the beginning, impressive combinations follow as the level rises. The inventory handling, as well as the release bugs and the high hardware requirements at the time are criticized. In the retrospective, GameStar placed the game at number 135 on its list of the 250 best PC games of all time in 2018. With its “sophisticated open-world design” it “makes every Ubisoft world map paved with symbols green with envy”. A year later, it was also ranked twenty-fifth of the 100 best PC role-playing games of all time. According to an English-language article published on Rock, Paper, Shotgun in 2016 , Gothic is more believable than most modern computer role-playing games .

Sales figures

According to an article by the German trade magazine GameStar in 2003, Gothic was unable to make its international breakthrough.

Game developer Mike Hoge stated in an interview that the game cost several million to develop, but only brought back a few of them.

According to the German fansite World of Gothic , every Gothic part has reached six-figure sales. The author suspects that profits have flowed, probably just not for everyone involved.

In a forum post from January 2009, Michael Rüve, the managing director of Piranha Bytes, spoke of sales figures that were considerably higher than 100,000 units, even if you do not count the CDs in computer game magazines.

Media based on the game

In Egmont Ehapa a 44-page comic that tells a prequel to the first part of the Gothic series appeared. It is about Milten, who is sentenced to life in the barrier for theft and who fights for his place in the “society” of fellow prisoners. The future comrades-in-arms Gorn, Lester and Diego are also discussed, and you can also learn why the second tower of the old camp collapsed. The comic is no longer published and is now in great demand as a collector's item. A reprint of the comic was only included in the 01/2007 issue of the games magazine PC Games .

The plot of the game was filmed in 2006 by a fan project with the game's own graphics.

Others

  • The medieval rock band In Extremo has a virtual appearance in the old camp , where they perform their song " Herr Mannelig ". As long as the player is in the second chapter, the band plays next to the entrance to the castle. The site was removed for non-German language publications for licensing reasons.
  • The US version of Gothic was slightly censored: A bathing slave was given a bra that she does not wear in the German version.
  • Gothic also has a more or less hidden side quest towards the end of the game, in which you have to find the books of Chromanin. This quest, which looks like a scavenger hunt, was included with the second patch for version 1.08h.

successor

After the release of Gothic , developers at Piranha Bytes first worked on an add-on for the game. However, under pressure from Phenomedia , the development was discontinued after entering into a cooperation with publisher JoWooD . Instead, the focus was on the development of Gothic II . The successor was finally published on November 29, 2002 by JoWooD.

Remake

On December 13, 2019, publisher THQ Nordic , who had previously bought developer and rights holder Piranha Bytes , published a gameplay demo for a remake of Gothic . With this demo, which was not developed by Piranha Bytes, but by THQ Nordic Barcelona, they want to test the reaction of the players. The prototype based on the Unreal Engine 4 can be downloaded from Steam if you own a game from Piranha Bytes. After the two-hour demo, players should fill out a questionnaire that will determine how the remake will continue to develop. Over 90% of the players in this survey are said to have voted in favor of the development of the title. As THQ Nordic announced in February 2020, the game will be further developed by the studio in Barcelona . A total of 180,000 players are said to have played the teaser. The remake is intended for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X appear.
