The Kreuzkapelle was built in 1735 and, according to the inscription, was donated by the Wollbacher Sebastian Haseney (* 1677 in Hundsbach near Hammelburg , † May 18, 1746 in Wollbach; married on January 15, 1703 to the Wollbacher Elisabeth Schuldheis) and the Zahlbacher Kaspar Schmitt.

According to tradition, pilgrimages to the Kreuzkapelle took place in the past. With the construction of the Wollbach Chapel of Seven Pains in 1889, pilgrimages led alternately to Wollbach and Zahlbach and were replaced from 1920 by pilgrimages to Maria Ehrenberg .

Inside the chapel there are figures of saints from the 20th century on the altar. They depict the saints Joseph of Nazareth , Sebastian , Wendelin and Judas Thaddäus . The altarpiece shows the crucifixion of Christ . There is a pietà in front of the altarpiece .

When the Mariengrotto was built in 1951, an avenue with Douglas fir trees was created at the entrance to the chapel by the Zahlbach forest and field guardian Gottfried Böhnlein. Because of the endangerment of the dry branches for the visitors of the chapel, the trees were felled in November 2001 on the instructions of local officer Robert Schmitt and replaced by maple trees and hedges by April 2002.

Among other things, in the years 1975 and 1986 thorough renovation took place the chapel, where the roof of the chapel was replaced and made Stangenroth derived church painter Kurt Schraud newly painted the figures of saints and gilded. The costs amounted to 6500 DM and were partly paid by the Zahlbach hunting companions.

The last renovation of the chapel so far took place in 2002.

Table pedestal cross

The table base cross made of yellow sandstone next to the chapel was erected in 1960 by the Stralsbach sculptor Rudolf Rost. It replaced a cross of unknown date of origin in the same place, which could no longer be preserved due to excessive weathering. The four meter high cross is in the Nazarene style; the base bears the inscription "It is done" in Latin capital letters.

Way of the Cross

12th station of the cross.

The Way of the Cross was founded in 1826 by the innkeeper Michael Albert from Zahlbach and his wife Anna Albert, née Keßler, who came from Gefäll ; an inscription on the first station commemorates the donors. At the 14th station, an inscription indicates the authorship of the sculptor Georg Metz from Kißing.

At the request of the Burkardroth pastor Jacob Hock on April 21, 1845 and after approval by the Ordinariate in Würzburg on April 26, 1845, the Stations of the Cross were inaugurated on September 29, 1845 by Ambros Mayer, the Guardian of the Kreuzberg Monastery .

After notification from the Burkardrother church administration on June 5, 1876, the stations were first renovated. The costs amounted to 217 marks (about 6500 euros) and were covered by a specially established Kreuzkapelle foundation. This collected donations from the population as well as during pilgrimages to the Zahlbach Cross. The inauguration of the restored stations took place on July 30, 1876 by Hieronymus Wohlfahrt, the Guardian of the Kreuzberg Monastery.

When in 1885 some of the wooden crosses implemented in the stations were missing, the Burkardroth pastor Michael Joseph Kahler felt compelled to rededicate the stations with new wooden crosses. A similar process was repeated in 1903 when again little wooden crosses were missing; this time the Burkardroth locksmith Kaspar Albert installed iron crosses at the stations for the new consecration on November 8, 1903.

With the municipal reform in 1972, ownership of the Stations of the Cross was transferred to Markt Burkardroth.

Due to the need for renewed renovation of the stations in 1977, a discussion was held in Zahlbach as to whether the old stations should be replaced by exposition resin casts or whether new stations should be erected from weatherproof stone. The restorers from the Würzburg State Office for Monument Preservation , who were brought in in March 1983 , campaigned for the original stations to be preserved; To reduce costs, some of the plinths can be made from new natural stone. The renovation carried out by a specialist company using a new impregnation system was completed in July 1983. The market community was supported in financing the costs in the amount of DM 86,298 through grants from the Lower Franconia district , the Bad Kissingen district and the State Office for Monument Preservation.

In August 1982, pastor Otto Schmitt (1902–1983), son of the former mayor Kaspar Schmitt, who was born in Zahlbach, bequeathed 20,000 DM to maintain the Stations of the Cross.

In 1984 nine of the stations showed cracks despite the acrylic resin impregnation, which reappeared from the following year despite renovation measures by the specialist company in August 1985. In the spring of 1993, an investigation by another specialist company revealed that the cracks were caused by clayey layers of material in the sandstone, the swelling effect of which differed from that of the rest of the rock material. The company offered to replace the stations with casts. Despite a municipal council resolution, the only thing that happened for unknown reasons was a renovation of the damaged stations, which returned to their location in autumn 1998. In the following year, irreparable damage occurred again. Since 2006, the stations have been enclosed in the winter months in order to limit the damage.

Mary's Grotto

Lourdes grotto.

The Mariengrotte was donated and financed in 1951 by the Zahlbach veterinarian Franz Wehming and his wife Anneliese Wehming, née Soder. They also financed the grotto figures of the Madonna and Saint Bernadette .

In gratitude for his return home after the Second World War , the Zahlbacher Franz Rüttiger, known as "Grätles Franz", supported the construction of the grotto with his three sons by collecting limestone as building material.
