history

The place was first mentioned in 1303 as "Zagelbach" in a fief book of the Würzburg monastery . The place name changed over time to Tagelbach (1318), Zailbach (1330), Zanlbach (1346), Zollbach (1528), Zaalbach (1602), Zalbach (1631) and in 1695 for the first time in Zahlbach.

In the peasant uprising of 1525 , Zahlbach farmers took part in a storming of Kilianstein Castle. After the failure of the uprising, they had to pledge obedience to the church and the bishop, pay taxes and take part in the reconstruction of the castles of Aschach and Trimburg .

In 1587, Zahlbach moved from the Stralsbach parish to Burkardroth .

On August 14, 1670, there was a great fire, to which almost the entire village and 50 farmsteads fell victim.

In 1886 Zahlbach contributed 200 marks to the financing of the local railway Bad Kissingen - Burkardroth ", in 1906 to the local railway Niederlauer - Burkardroth (100 marks) and in 1909 to the local railway Brückenau - Bad Kissingen (200 marks).

Around 1900 a hermit of unknown origin lived in Zahlbach in a house with no water or electricity connections, who was only known under the name “der Zirk” and had no steady income. Her food consisted of having lunch in a different household in the town every day. After her sudden disappearance from Zahlbach, her further fate was initially unknown. This, as well as their identity, could be reconstructed through information from various Zahlbachers. Her real name was Barbara Albert, was born the illegitimate daughter of Zahlbacher Anna Albert and was orphaned at the age of four. In old age she found accommodation in the Würzburg Juliusspital and died there of stomach cancer at the age of 78. In 2011 it was possible to reconstruct its appearance with the help of contemporary witnesses.

In the course of planning a merger of Zahlbach with Wollbach and Frauenroth in 1908, Mayor Kaspar Ehrenberg stated that Zahlbach wanted to “maintain its independence for later times”.

In 1912 a water pipeline was built to Zahlbach; In 1920 the place was connected to the power grid.

At the beginning of the Second World War , as part of an evacuation of the Saarland, a large part of the 75 or so people who were moved from Hassel ( district of Sankt Ingbert ) to Burkardroth were housed in Zahlbach. On April 6, 1945, the village was conquered by US troops. During the war Zahlbach recorded 24 dead and 10 missing.

The Zahlbach sewer system was set up in 1957, and the town's water supply was expanded a year later.

On January 1, 1972, Zahlbach became part of the market in Burkardroth as part of the municipal reform. In October 1971, surveys and votes had taken place in the villages that were to be incorporated into Burkardroth. Of the 265 votes cast in Zahlbach, 208 decided in favor of incorporation. Zahlbach's last mayor before the incorporation was Josef Albert.

The Five Wound Path (5th Station)

Kreuzkapelle at the Zahlbacher Kreuz

According to an inscription above the entrance door, the Kreuzkapelle was donated by Sebastian Haseney from Wollbach and Kaspar Schmitt from Zahlbach and built in 1735. The chapel includes a cross (1960; as a replacement for a previous cross), Stations of the Cross (donated in 1826 by the Zahlbach innkeeper Michael Albert and his wife Anna Albert) and a St. Mary's Grotto (donated in 1951 by the Zahlbach veterinarian Franz Wehming and his Mrs. Anneliese Wehming).

The chapel has been renovated several times over the years, most recently in 2002. The Stations of the Cross were damaged several times over the years, despite repeated renovations.

Five Wounds Way

On the footpath between Zahlbach and the Kreuzkapelle there is a five-wound path , which was created in 1896 as part of a foundation by Michael Wolf from Zahlbach. The stations were carried out by the sculptor and farmer Josef Albert (1834–1900) from Römershag .
