The station was built on the volcanic deep-sea plateau Muir Seamount approx. 300 km northeast of Bermuda and is supplied from the research vessel RV Triton . Shortly before the five-person permanent crew is due to be replaced, a seaquake shakes the plateau and the station plunges into an adjacent ditch. Two of the divers who were outside the station during the quake can only be recovered dead. The nearby HMCS Onondaga submarine supports the Triton crew in their search for possible survivors, but has to abandon them unsuccessfully because it is too big for the narrow underwater canyons.

The manufacturer of Oceanlab II sends the deep-sea submarine Neptune under the command of Commander Adrian Blake to the site of the accident. The first dive will be canceled due to persistent aftershocks and decreasing battery capacity. It is decided to hang the Neptune on a supply cable for the second dive. When the maximum range of the cable is reached, Dr. Leah Jansen the supply cable without consulting. After a short discussion, it is decided to start the search for the three missing divers, one of whom is with Dr. Jansen is in a relationship to continue.

The lionfish attacks the chief diver of the Triton Don "Mack" MacKay, who is traveling with him , as he tries to salvage part of the wreckage of Oceanlab II . A giant crab attacks the Neptune , destroying a module of the central power supply. After the damage has been repaired, the four crew members of the Neptune finally find the wrecked Oceanlab II . The three survivors have hidden in a cave entrance from the attacking giant eels. When they discover the Neptune, they leave their hiding place, one of the three pays for the escape with his life, the other two escape from the eels and are rescued, including Dr. Jansen's partner Dr. Hal Hamilton.

criticism

The lexicon of the international film said that the film shows “banal deep sea adventures with a science fiction touch. A cheap production. ”Roger Greenspun wrote in the New York Times that anyone who manages to sit through this film for 90 minutes deserves not to reveal the ending. Cinema.de sums up: "Trashy pseudo-tricks from the 60-liter aquarium".

background

The underwater photos were taken under the direction of Lamar Boren and Paul Hebermann . After that, Boren was responsible for the underwater sequences of the two Bond films The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker - Top Secret . Many critics criticized the relatively simple special effects of this film. Really filmed animals were either enlarged and projected in front of the viewing window of the Neptune , or a model that was all too easily recognizable as such drives through an aquarium populated with marine life.
