The Rentwertshausen – Römhild railway was an almost 11 kilometer long branch line from Rentwertshausen to Römhild in Grabfeld in southern Thuringia . Because of the nearby Gleichberge , the railway line was also called the Gleichbergbahn . The single-track line with a gauge of 1435 mm ( standard gauge ) was not electrified. In 1973 the line was dismantled.

history

On December 15, 1874, rail traffic was started on the Schweinfurt – Meiningen line by the Bavarian State Railways . The branch line followed on November 25, 1893, the 10.7 kilometer long secondary line from Rentwertshausen to Römhild.

The basis for the route was a state treaty between the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen , which was signed on June 16, 1884. The railway line was financed by Sachsen-Meiningen and the municipality of Römhild, the construction and operation of the branch line was carried out by the Bavarian State Railway . At the beginning of March 1895, Sachsen-Meiningen sold the Gleichbergbahn to Bavaria.

From 1901, when the municipal basalt works in Römhild went into operation, the line developed into the city's lifeline. Over 140,000 wagons with 10 tons of gravel or gneiss each, i.e. an average of around 18 wagons per working day, were driven to Rentwertshausen in the following 26 years.

After the Second World War , the railway line, which had been administered by the Reichsbahndirektion Nürnberg since 1931 , came due to the demarcation to the route network of the Reichsbahndirektion Erfurt . Since the main line between Mühlfeld and Rentwertshausen was closed, the passenger trains now ran directly from Römhild to Meiningen . The passenger train service was set on September 29, 1968, the freight service followed in early January 1970. The line was dismantled between 1972 and 1973.

business

The 93 and 86 series were used as locomotives . In 1944, four pairs of passenger trains drove daily on the route number 417k at the time, with a journey time of around half an hour.
