history

Until the 17th century

Westenfeld was first mentioned in a document in 871. The place names changed from Westinvelt (1185) via Westenveylt (1319), Westenfild (1342) to today's names. The place initially belonged to the Fulda Monastery , later it was owned by the Veßra Monastery . Westenfeld was looted and set on fire in 1634.

The Church of Christ's Crib

The church was first mentioned in 1185. In Lehfeldt / Voss from 1904 it is assumed that a previous church collapsed in 1574 and a new one was built in 1578. However, the sacristy bears traces of the time before the Reformation and refers to a presumed predecessor building from 1453. The year 1574 was uncovered above the triumphal arch in 1938 when the old plaster was removed. The year 1731 is given as the year the church was built, when the church underwent a major renovation. The baroque name probably comes from this period . The year of origin, 1731, can also be found in a Latin inscription, which is engraved in a stone tablet with an angel's head above the south door. A stone with a hen from Henneberg is walled up over the western door of the church. After entering the church through this door, the view falls on the light-flooded chancel. All lines of sight point to the altar as the central location of the religious ceremony. A spiral staircase to the right of the altar leads to the high pulpit. To the right of the pulpit hangs a picture of Luther with a large white swan, which Luther chose as his heraldic animal because Jan Hus (Czech: goose) is said to have said before he was cremated at the Council of Constance in 1415: “Now you are burning a goose , but after me a swan will come who will continue my work! ” . Westfeld belonged to Veßra Monastery until 1517, when the Reformation began with Luther's theses against the indulgence trade .

The font is from the 16th century, the first bell is from 1777 (JA Mayer, Coburg), the second from 1850 (R. Mayer, Rudolstadt). The church tower has been crowned with a golden ball since 2003.

20th and 21st centuries

The west field parish had Sülzdorf as a daughter parish for many centuries . In 1958 the last pastor lived in the rectory. After that, the two places were placed under different vacancy administrations, namely Queienfeld and Haina . On May 1, 1998, Westenfeld came to the Queienfeld parish, Sülzdorf to the Römhild parish . The parishes of Queienfeld and Westenfeld combine various joint ecumenical events such as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and the World Day of Prayer for Women , which take place alternately in Queienfeld, Westenfeld and Wolfmannshausen . Queienfeld and Westenfeld also have a common church choir.

On December 31, 2012, the community of Westenfeld merged with the city of Römhild and other previously independent communities to form the new city of Römhild.
