Andreas Corvinus (also: Rabe, Raabe ; * October 7, 1589 in Westenfeld ; † January 11, 1648 in Leipzig ) was a German rhetorician , philologist and lawyer .

Life

Corvinus came from an evangelical parish family on his father's side. His father Johannes Corvinus was a pastor in Westenfeld im Grabfeld , where he and his father Martin Corvinus had been the pastor for 80 years since the Reformation. His mother, Kunigunde, who came from Coburg , was the daughter of the local citizen and royal shoemaker Otto Cramer. After being raised by his parents, he moved to high school in Schleusingen in 1598 , where he took lessons from teachers such as Jacob Sorger (1574–1633), Wolfgang Seber (1573–1634) and Joachim Zehner (1566–1612), and in 1602 he was in the Prima class . At Easter 1608 his parents sent him to his uncle Wolfgang Corvinus (1562–1614) in Leipzig, where he began studying.

In addition to his uncle, Philipp Müller (1585–1659) and Heinrich Höpfner were among his first formative teachers. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in philosophy, he began studying law. In 1612 he traveled to Regensburg , became the overseer of some young noblemen, pursued trials at the imperial court, traveled to Moravia and Bohemia and returned to Leipzig in 1615, where in 1616 he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. After working as a notary in the meantime, he applied on the advice of his uncle for a position at the philosophical faculty, of which he became assessor in 1618. In 1620 he was given the professorship of rhetoric at the University of Leipzig ; in 1628 he had become a member of the great prince's college , of which he was procured three times and its provost twice. In 1640 he obtained a licentiate in law.

In 1642 he became the great provost , in 1643 university provost administrator and in 1644 took over the professorship of the Latin language. Corvinus also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University. In 1620, 1624, 1628, 1630, 1634, 1637, 1640 and 1647 he was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. In the summer semesters 1630 and 1634 and in the winter semester 1638 he was rector of the alma mater . In addition, he had received his training from Janusz Radziwiłł in Leipzig and, as a member of the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences, negotiated with Lennart Torstensson during the Thirty Years' War .

At scurvy ill and tuberculosis, he died in 1648 and was buried in Leipzig on 14 January.
