Joachim Zehner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joachim Zehner , also Joachim Decimator (born April 28, 1566 in Themar , † May 29, 1612 in Schleusingen ) was clergyman and superintendent in Schleusingen and founder of the so-called Zehner Library, which is now in the Natural History Museum in Schleusingen.

Life

Joachim was born as the son of the then rector in Themar Balthasar Zehner and his wife Ursula. After initial private lessons from his father and a few other teachers, Zehner moved in 1576 to the princely Henneberg state school in Schleusingen. On June 15, 1581, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where, after a relatively short period of study, on September 4, 1583, he was elected Master of Philosophy. After completing theological studies in Wittenberg, he received the post of deacon in Meiningen in 1585 , where he rose to become archdeacon in the same year.

In 1587 he took over a pastor's position in Mühlfeld. In 1589 he moved to Suhl as pastor and dean, and in 1596 he went to Schleusingen as pastor and superintendent. At the same time, with the latter office, he took over the inspection of the schools there, became a high school professor of theology at the Princely Henneberg State School and also continued to hold the post of consistorial assistant in Suhl. In 1608 he was appointed general superintendent of the princely county of Henneberg by the Saxon elector Christian II.

Zehner put on an important collection of prints and manuscripts , based on a donation from the last Henneberg Count Georg Ernst (1511–1583) to the grammar school founded by him in 1577. The collection was continued and expanded by Zehner's son, the superintendent Samuel Zehner (1594–1635), who was also rector of the grammar school from 1632 to 1635, and by later rectors and ephors. The collection, known as the Zehnersche Library, was purchased by the Schleusingen grammar school library in 1658 .

This grew to around 5000 volumes over the centuries. It was handed over to the local history museum in Schleusingen in 1958 and is now in the library of the Natural History Museum in Bertholdsburg Castle in Schleusingen. The Hennebergische Gymnasialbibliothek, part of which the Zehnersche Library is today, is one of the rare, relatively completely preserved school libraries from the 16th and 17th centuries. Century. Its most valuable parts include 199 incunabula , 24 manuscripts and a letter from Luther .

Zehner had married Brigitta Schaller († December 18, 1621 in Schleusingen), the daughter of the superintendent in Meiningen Thomas Schaller (born March 20, 1534 in Rotdorf bei Blankenhain; † December 12, 1611 in Meiningen) on May 12, 1585.
