Sebastian Abesser (born June 21, 1581 in Rohr , † August 26, 1638 in Suhl ) was a German Protestant theologian. From 1620 to 1638 he was superintendent in Suhl.

Life

Abesser came from the county of Henneberg . He was the son of the forest master and mayor in Rohr Anton Abesser and his wife Catharina (née Strang). In 1594 he attended the school in Meiningen and in 1597 the Henneberg State School in Schleusingen . In the summer semester of 1605 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig and earned his living while studying as a tutor for the children of the Leipzig bookseller Thomas Schürer (born March 1, 1563 in Halberstadt; † August 13, 1615 in Leipzig).

On April 29, 1606, he acquired the baccalaureate in philosophy at the University of Leipzig, and on January 20, 1608, he was awarded a master's degree in philosophical sciences. In Leipzig he also pursued theological studies, for which he practiced disputing and preaching. In 1610 he received an appointment as a deacon in Schleusingen. After he was ordained on April 4th in Meiningen, he took up this office and rose to become archdeacon in October of the same year.

He held this office for ten years until he was promoted to superintendent in the neighboring city of Suhl in 1620 and took over the post of consistorial assistant in 1632. As such, he led the congregation of the main church St. Marien in Suhl through the terrible war years and experienced looting and pillage of the city and the surrounding areas. On the occasion of Sebastian Abesser's funeral on June 29, 1638 in the Marienkirche in Suhl, a funeral sermon by Georg Ernst Schade (1588–1647) appeared in print in 1638.
