Johann Paul Reinhard (born December 17, 1722 in Hildburghausen , † May 16, 1779 in Erlangen ) was a German university professor and historian .

Life

Johann Paul Reinhard was the son of Lorenz Reinhard (1700–1752), teacher and vice-principal at the Hildburghausen grammar school and his wife Maria Rosina, geb. Rich.

He attended grammar school in Weimar after his father was transferred to the grammar school there as a grammar school teacher in 1727 due to the closure of the grammar school in Hildburghausen. After finishing school he began studying theology at the University of Jena in July 1739 ; there he heard lectures from Johann Peter Reusch , Joachim Georg Darjes , Johann Gottfried Tympe , Karl Gotthelf Müller , Reckenberg, Johann Georg Walch , Caspar Jacob Huth (1711–1760) and Joachim Ehrenfried Pfeiffer . However, his interest in history predominated and he mainly listened to the lectures of Christian Gottlieb Buder . The philosophical disciplines also aroused his interest; he joined the Literary Society and was its secretary for a time.

In 1743 he accompanied his theological teacher Caspar Jacob Huth, who had been called to the newly founded University of Erlangen , initially only to take part in the opening ceremonies. On the second day of the festivities, he obtained his master's degree , gave up his theological profession and immediately began to give historical and philological lectures; In 1745 he was promoted to associate professor and in 1752 to full professor of philosophy. In his contract of employment of August 16, 1745, it was noted that he should teach the students in philosophy and philology and, as the first chancellor Daniel de Superville added, mainly in historicis .

In 1755 he was given the office of librarian at the university library and remained in this office until 1764.

After Chladwig's death in 1759 he was appointed professor of eloquence and poetry, and when the full professorship in history became vacant in 1767, he was formally transferred to this chair . He was also released from representing the other subjects that he had previously held.

His language skills were remarkable; he mastered Greek , Latin , French , Italian , Dutch and Spanish .
