Joachim Ehrenfried Pfeiffer (born September 6, 1709 in Güstrow , † October 18, 1787 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant theologian . He taught at the University of Erlangen .

Life

Joachim Ehrenfried Pfeiffer is the son of the Güstrow preacher Johann Ehrenfried Pfeiffer (son of the theologian August Pfeiffer ) and his wife Anna Agneta Barnstorff, the daughter of the Rostock medical professor Bernhard Barnstorff . Because his father died three years after Pfeiffer was born, his mother raised him. After the first lesson, she let him be taught by private tutors, whereupon he attended a grammar school in Güstrow and then in Stralsund .

In 1728 Pfeiffer began studying theology at the University of Rostock . There he received his master's degree in philosophy in 1730 and began to give lectures on the Hebrew language. He interrupted this to continue his studies at the University of Jena . There he studied the Leibnitz-Wolfische philosophy, which at that time received hardly any attention. He also read privately to a few students. In October 1737 he defended his work de malo morali ob divinam ad bonos fines directionem ad actiones Dei haud referendo, nec per locum Exod. 4, 21 relato , completed his habilitation and was allowed to hold public lectures.

Pfeiffer's lectures received applause, and in his disputations he proved to be knowledgeable and humble, so that the Faculty of Philosophy appointed him as an adjunct .

By his former teacher Jena Reusch recommended Pfeiffer received in 1743 the appointment of extraordinary theology professorship at the University of Erlangen. In 1743 he defended a work before leaving Jena and received his doctorate in theology on October 17th . In Erlangen he was also the dean of the Faculty of Theology and thus its first. As early as 1744, he was also prorector of the University of Erlangen.

Occupied by his academic posts, he also succeeded the late preacher Altmann in the Erlangen old town in 1744, for which several people had to persuade him. Since the following year he has held the office of scholar at the Bayreuth and Erlangen grammar schools. In 1748 he also became superintendent in Erlangen and first professor of theology. In 1759 the German Society of Erlangen accepted him as an honorary member. This was the reason for him to reject the appointment as professor at the University of Bützow that he had received the following year . He held further vice-rectorates in 1748, 1757/1758, 1761, 1765/1766, 1769 and 1780. He turned down three appointments as professor of theology at the University of Jena in 1748, 1750 and 1758. He did not demand any compensation from the prince, although this was customary at the time.

In old age, the academic activities caused increasing difficulties for Pfeiffer. In addition, conflicts arose within the Erlangen university professors, so that the professorship lost its luster for him. He expressed the wish to be able to accept the superintendent of another city within the Bayreuth principality, but this did not happen. Margrave Alexander initially had Pfeiffer's salary increased, provided him with assistants at the universities and finally appointed him a secret church council in 1786, without the latter having expressed a wish.

1787 died Pfeiffer at the age of 78 years Serothorax . The marriage with Sabina Dorothea Billing, the daughter of a pastor from Trautskirchen , came from August Friedrich Pfeiffer , who, like his father, taught theology in Erlangen.

Act

Pfeiffer had a thorough knowledge of dogmatics , patristics and polemics ; the Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, Syrian and rabbinic languages. He was considered condescending, undemanding, humble, meek and disinterested, for which he enjoyed popularity among his students. In the beginning, students sometimes traveled long distances to attend Pfeiffer's lectures; later this subsided; in the end, his lectures, as it is said, were no longer attended.

Pfeiffer can be assigned to anti-rationalism . In addition to journal articles, he also wrote dissertations and programs.

Carl Gustav Adolf Siegfried described Pfeiffer's works with little depth and thoroughness. These are numerous and about exegesis and dogmatics. He explains the fact that Pfeiffer was busy with official tasks and church interests and only wrote the writings on the side.
