Georg Voss (art historian)

Georg Voss , mostly Georg Voss , (born September 5, 1854 in Magdeburg , † 1932 ) was a German art historian and monument conservator .

Life

Georg Voss studied art history at the universities of Berlin and Vienna . After receiving his doctorate, he began as a volunteer at the Royal Museums in Berlin in 1882 . In 1885 he completed his habilitation at the Königlich Technische Hochschule zu Berlin , where he taught as a private lecturer in the architecture department (History of Fine Arts in the 19th Century - History of German Art) from the winter semester 1885/86 to the winter semester 1892/93. He also lectured at the Viktorialyceum and the Royal Art School . From 1886 he was an art consultant for the Berlin national newspaper .

From 1899 Voss worked as a curator of the art monuments of Thuringia . When Voss inventoried the Brandenburg monuments in the 1920s , he was assisted by the student Hildebrand Gurlitt .

On June 16, 1913, Voss presented Kaiser Wilhelm II with a minted medal on behalf of the Association for the History of Berlin on the occasion of the latter's 25th anniversary in government. From 1916 to 1919 Voss was the first chairman of the association. Voss was a member of many clubs, u. a. the Art History Society founded by Wilhelm von Bode in 1887 and the Association for Historical Art .
