Gerhard Kutzsch

Gerhard Kutzsch (born August 5, 1914 in Leipzig , † September 19, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German archivist and director of the Berlin State Archives .

Life

Kutzsch's father was the Reichsbahn inspector Gerhard Kutzsch, his mother Agnes Kutzsch, née Röcke. In 1945 he married Gertraude Gabin.

From 1936 he studied history, English and German at the University of Leipzig . He received his doctorate in 1941 with a biography on Ernst Moritz Arndt . 1950/1951 he studied politics at the German University for Politics in Berlin .

In 1943 Kutzsch was drafted into service with the Reichsbahn . After the war he worked briefly as a primary school teacher before studying again. In 1952 he began to work as a volunteer at the main archive in Berlin . In order to qualify for a permanent position, he took a course at the Marburg Archive School in 1955 . On June 1, 1957, Kutzsch was employed in the Berlin State Archives . He was director of the archive from 1965 to 1979.

From 1978 to 1985 Kutzsch was the first chairman of the Association for the History of Berlin .
