Paul Clauswitz

Paul Clauswitz (born February 22, 1839 in Wolmirstedt ; † April 11, 1927 ) was the first permanent archivist of the city of Berlin and head of the municipal library .

Life

Paul Clauswitz, son of the judge Justus Clauswitz , attended high school in Luckau from 1850 to 1857 , followed by studies at the Berlin Bauakademie from 1858 to 1860 , which he completed with an exam in field measurement . In 1860/1861 he did his military service, in 1866 he took part in the war against Austria and in 1871 in the Franco-German War . On March 14, 1867, he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen with an art history dissertation ( Die Kupferstiche des Lukas von Leyden ), and in 1873 he completed his habilitation thesis.

In 1873 he began his career in archives at the Magdeburg State Archives . He was then transferred to the State Archives in Poznan , where he also worked as secretary of the archive in Münster. In 1877 he was appointed director in Poznan. On January 1, 1879, he was appointed head of the Berlin City Archives and the municipal library. He gave up the management of the library in 1890, and left the archive on December 31, 1912.

On December 15, 1887, he married Hedwig Nigmann.

Paul Clauswitz died in Berlin in 1927 at the age of 88 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
