Eberhard Faden

Eberhard Faden (born September 1, 1889 in Berlin-Moabit ; † November 26, 1973 in Berlin-Hermsdorf ) was a German historian , school teacher and head of the Berlin City Archives from 1939 to 1945.

Life

Faden was the son of a Prussian official who worked as a librarian in the Reich Office of the Interior . In 1917 he married Christina Weick.

He went to school at the Luisenstädtischen Gymnasium and began studying German , history and geography in Berlin in 1908 . During his studies he was a member of the German-Völkisch student association and the Ostmarkverein. In addition, he was involved in the student committee. In 1914 he completed his doctorate .

Immediately afterwards he entered the military and was seriously wounded in front of Verdun , which resulted in a long hospital stay . The Secret State Archives (PK) keep many of the letters he wrote to Otto Hintze during the First World War.

In 1918 and 1919 he completed his university education with a state examination and a pedagogical examination. Until 1939 he taught at the Schillergymnasium in Berlin, where he continued to research local history. In 1928 he was appointed to the test center for history books of the Prussian higher education institutions , where he worked until the 1940s. In 1937 he was one of the authors of the scientific commemorative publication for the 700th anniversary of the city of Berlin . In 1939, after the forced retirement of the city ​​archives director Ernst Kaeber, he was appointed his successor. Faden dealt with genealogy research, the war history of Berlin and the protection and evacuation of archival materials during the Second World War . With the end of National Socialism in 1945, his activity as city archives director ended, although he was not incriminated in the denazification process . From 1950 to 1955 he worked again in the school service.

Faden had been a member of the Association for the History of Berlin since 1926 . From 1934 to 1945 he was its first deputy chairman.

He was a member of the German People's Party , he joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1933 . In addition, he was loud self-disclosure in Reichsluftschutzbund , in the National Socialist People's Welfare , the National Socialist Teachers League , the National Kriegsopferversorgung , RKolBd and the Association of German East .
