Jürgen Wetzel (* 1938 in Garlitz , Märkisch Luch municipality , Havelland district) is a German historian . Between 1991 and 2003 he was director of the Berlin State Archives .

Life

Wetzel is the son of the farmer Gerhard Wetzel and Erika, geb. Giese.

He attended the village school in Garlitz from 1945 to 1952. In 1953 the family fled to West Berlin . There he attended the Gottfried-Keller-Gymnasium in Charlottenburg and the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium in Neukölln , where he passed his matriculation examination in 1960. He then studied history, political science and sociology in Marburg (1960–62) and Kiel (1962–68). A year later he received a doctorate in Kiel for Dr. phil. .

In 1970 he began as a lecturer in the history of political parties and party law at the Eicholz Academy of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung , until he completed his training as a scientific archivist at the Berlin State Archives and at the Institute for Archive Studies in Marburg from 1971. In 1973 he passed the state examination for higher archival service and was appointed temporary archivist at the Berlin State Archives. From 1974 to 1976 he was in charge of the construction planning for the archive building on Kalckreuthstraße (Berlin-Schöneberg) and the move there from Straße des 17. Juni. From 1977 to 1981 he worked for a total of twelve months as part of the OMGUS project to index files of the American military government in Berlin from 1945 to 1949 in the National Archives in Washington. In 1980 he was appointed archivist and deputy head of the state archives. A year later, he was appointed archive director. From 1991 he headed the state archive and merged it with the three East Berlin archives. In 1994 he was appointed chief archive director. Wetzel followed Dagmar Unverhau from 1991 to 2003 as director of the Berlin State Archives . In this function he organized the amalgamation of the various locations of the Berlin State Archives in East and West Berlin at a central point on Eichenborndamm. In 2000, under his leadership, the state image center and the IBA archive were transferred to the state archive. In 2003 Wetzel was retired.

Jürgen Wetzel has been on the board of the Association for the History of Berlin since 1978 , and has been an assessor since March 2015.
