Election of the Federal President in Austria in 1963
The election of the Federal President in Austria in 1963 , the third popular election of an Austrian head of state , took place on April 28, 1963. The previous incumbent, Adolf Schärf , was confirmed in his office in the first ballot and was thus the first Federal President to begin a second term . However, Schärf died in February 1965, which should make an early election necessary.
Starting position
The previous Federal President, Adolf Schärf ( SPÖ ), ran for another election, as the constitution allowed. His competitors were the former Chancellor Julius Raab ( ÖVP ) and the lawyer Josef Kimmel (proposed by the European Federalist Party of Austria ).

Adolf Schärf was sworn in again on May 22, 1963 before the Federal Assembly.
