The federal presidential election in Austria in 1965 , the fourth popular election of an Austrian head of state , took place on May 23, 1965. The previous incumbent, Adolf Schärf , who was elected in the federal presidential election in Austria in 1963 , died on February 28, 1965 after almost two years in office.

Schärf's successor was candidate Franz Jonas from the SPÖ , who prevailed against his opponent Alfons Gorbach from the ÖVP .

Of 4,874,928 eligible voters, 4,679,427 cast their votes (with general compulsory voting), resulting in a turnout of 96%. 94,103 votes were considered invalid, which corresponds to 2% of the votes cast.

Franz Jonas was sworn in before the Federal Assembly on June 9, 1965 .
