Election of the Federal President in Austria in 1971
The election of the Federal President in Austria in 1971 , the fifth popular election of an Austrian head of state , took place on April 25, 1971. The previous incumbent, Franz Jonas , was confirmed in his office and was the second Federal President to begin a second term. Jonas died in April 1974, which made an early election necessary.
Starting position
The previous Federal President Franz Jonas ran for re-election. His rival was Kurt Waldheim ( ÖVP ), who ran for the first time in a federal presidential election.

Of the 5,024,324 eligible voters, 4,787,706 (95.3%) cast their votes (with general compulsory voting ). 75,658 votes were considered invalid, which corresponds to 1.6% of the votes cast.

Jonas was sworn in on June 9, 1971 before the Federal Assembly .
