The election of the Federal President in Austria in 1974 , the sixth popular election of an Austrian head of state , took place on June 23, 1974. The previous incumbent, Franz Jonas , died on April 24, 1974.

Starting position

The previous incumbent, Franz Jonas , died on April 24, 1974. This made an early election necessary. For Jonas' successor, Rudolf Kirchschläger applied independently - but was supported by the SPÖ - and Alois Lugger from the ÖVP .

Out of 5,031,772 eligible voters (with general compulsory voting), 4,733,016 cast their votes, resulting in a turnout of 94.1%. 102,179 votes were considered invalid, which corresponds to 2.2% of the votes cast.

Swearing in

Rudolf Kirchschläger was sworn in on July 8, 1974 before the Federal Assembly.
