The election of the Federal President in Austria in 1974 , the sixth popular election of an Austrian head of state , took place on June 23, 1974. The previous incumbent, Franz Jonas , died on April 24, 1974.

The previous incumbent, Franz Jonas , died on April 24, 1974. This made an early election necessary. For Jonas' successor, Rudolf Kirchschläger applied independently - but was supported by the SPÖ - and Alois Lugger from the ÖVP .
