history

Garlitz fire station

Garlitz was first mentioned in 1161 as "Garzelice" in a document with the seal of Bishop Wilmar and is a typical street village . The village name indicates Slavic settlers. On August 17, 1822 the village burned down almost completely, but fires devastated the place several times before. In 1822, the reconstruction of the place began, the houses were rebuilt far apart and were given tiles instead of cane roofs - in order to counter the threat of fire. The typical street village image and the spacious village street result from this time. The village church was not spared from the fire in 1822 and like the village it burned several times before. In the Thirty Years' War in 1675 the village church was looted by the Swedes. In 1740/41 the village church was rebuilt. The bells had to be sacrificed due to the lack of raw materials during the First World War . Stripped of its bells after the war, it received two steel bells in 1922. However, a lightning strike in 1927 damaged the tower and its clock. A Schuke organ has been playing in the church since 1928.

In 2019 Garlitz won silver in the national competition “ Our village has a future ”. Garlitz also won the special “Culture in the Village” award.
