The Central Association of German Racial Rabbit Breeders (ZDRK) is an umbrella organization of purebred rabbit breeders in Germany.

history

The ZDRK in its current form emerged in 1990 from the merger of the West German Central Association of German Rabbit Breeders (ZDK, founded in 1948) with the Central German Association of Allotment Gardeners, Settlers and Small Animal Breeders (VKSK, founded in 1959). In 2006 the name was changed to the Central Association of German Racial Rabbit Breeders (ZDRK).

organization

Outline and size

The association is made up of 20 regional associations with almost 5,000 clubs and over 600 clubs. In addition, there are more than 600 women and more than 2,600 youth groups from the regional associations. The ZDRK represents over 160,000 members and is the world's largest umbrella organization for pedigree rabbit breeders.

Purebred rabbit breeding

In mid-2006, 88 rabbit breeds in 370 different colors had already been recognized by the association as a breed - and the trend has been increasing since then. Since 1960, however, pedigree rabbits are no longer operated under the economic aspect of rabbits as a meat supplier. Although traditional slaughtering and recycling is still common, sporting, societal and social aspects are increasingly in the foreground.

Rabbit exhibitions held at local, district, district, state and federal level also enable breeders to compare themselves directly with one another. The ZDRK also awards recognition for new breeds of pedigree rabbits and organizes the " Federal Rabbit Show " and " Federal Rammlerschauen " for pedigree rabbits every two years .

In addition, the ZDRK organizes nationwide training events. In specialist lectures, for example, knowledge about the problems of inheritance in pedigree rabbits, their diseases or nutrition, public relations, youth work, handicrafts and creative activities, the special clubs or even judges training courses are passed on.

Youth work

Youth work is also promoted by the associations organized in the ZDRK. The aim is to use rabbit breeding to teach children and young people between the ages of six and eighteen to enjoy animals and take responsibility for their care.

Handicraft groups

Within the handicraft groups, handicrafts made of rabbit fur and angora wool and other nature-related materials are made. In addition, pillows, blankets, pictures, coats and jackets are made from rabbit fur in individual or group work.

Club and work groups

Within the ZDRK there are special clubs and working groups within the regional associations that specialize in single or multiple races (e.g. giant club, ermine color dwarf club). These communities work on the breed-specific characteristics of the rabbits with a view to always referring to the breed standard. Here, too, exhibitions are held annually to assess the breeding status.

communication

Association-related information from ZDRK mainly in the two official Association organs rabbit newspaper KG is issued based in Berlin, and the hobby and small animal breeders Publisher mbH Co. and small animal news that has been published since March 2015, published (since 1895 were diverse Kaninchenzeitschriften- Title published during different publication periods).
