List of the longest tunnels in Germany
This list shows the longest road and rail tunnels in Germany.
Road tunnel
- over 1.0 kilometers in length
- If there are several tubes, the longest tube is decisive for the specified tunnel length
- If an opening date (commissioning) is documented by sources, the year of completion is not mentioned here, but the year of opening
- Column R indicates whether it is a two-tube tunnel or a single-tube (with two-way traffic)
Planned road tunnels
The realization of the following tunnel projects is very likely. If these tunnels are built, they would move up this list:

- Freudenstadt tunnel : length 1.475 km, connection between federal highway 28 and federal highway 462
- Schramberg valley bypass tunnel: two tunnels with a length of 1.65 km and 1.16 km, federal road 462
Railway tunnel
- If there are several tubes, the longest tube is decisive for the specified tunnel length
- For later extensions and extensions of a tunnel, the length specification refers to the time after the extension
- If an opening date (commissioning) is documented by sources, the year of completion is not mentioned here, but the year of opening
Planned rail tunnels
The realization of the following tunnel projects is very likely. If these tunnels are built, they would move up this list:
- Fehmarnbelt tunnel : length 17.6 km, of which around 40% is on the German side, the rest of the route on the national territory of Denmark . Four tubes are planned, two each with two lanes for vehicles and two for trains. Construction is scheduled to start in January 2021.
- Pegnitz Tunnel : length 7.58 km, between Nürnberg -Höfen and Fürth- Kronach, only used for freight trains.
- Offenburg tunnel : length 11.2 km (east tube) and 8.7 km (west tube), part of the upgraded and new Karlsruhe – Basel line , route under the urban area of Offenburg , use only for freight trains, not for passenger trains. The construction phase is scheduled for between 2025 and 2036.
- Ore Mountains Tunnel: length 26.53 km, part of the planned high-speed line Dresden – Prague , 15.1 km on the German side, 11.43 km on Czech territory. The construction phase is targeted for between 2030 and 2040.

There are project studies or requests from citizens' initiatives for the following tunnel projects, the realization of which is still uncertain:
- Wetterstein tunnel : length approx. 22 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Telfs -Ost. 10 km would be on the German side, the rest in Austria . The tunnel would be another access route for the Brenner Base Tunnel and would reduce the travel time from Munich to Innsbruck to 90 minutes.
- "Westerwald-Taunus-Tunnel", length approx. 107 to 118 km, freight train tunnel between Sankt Augustin and Wiesbaden ; rejected by the BMVI .
- Baltic Sea rail tunnel , length approx. 97 km, under the Baltic Sea between Malmö in Sweden and Stralsund in Germany.
S-Bahn tunnels and other rail tunnels
- Underground and light rail tunnels are not taken into account, as different building regulations apply to them
- Duplicate entries in comparison to the railway tunnel section are possible if the S-Bahn tunnel is also used by regional or long-distance trains
- For branches in the tunnel (side branches), the total length of the tunnel (total coverage including the side branches) is given in the separate column
- For later extensions and extensions of a tunnel, the length specification refers to the time after the extension
- If an opening date (commissioning) is documented by sources, the year of completion is not mentioned here, but the year of opening
Planned S-Bahn tunnels
The following S-Bahn tunnel projects are to be implemented in the coming years:
- Existing tunnel at Stuttgart Airport : It is planned to extend the Stuttgart-Rohr – Filderstadt railway line by 3.9 km to Neuhausen auf den Fildern .
